Hey Guys (and Gals),
I am planning on hosting a postal match if there is enough interest. (this match is in no way intended to compete or take away from Ranch Dog's Match) In fact, it was primarily desinged for those of us who don't own/shoot leverguns. the preliminary rules are as follows:
Postal Match Rules
Classes:
Scoped Rimfire: any sporting rimfire with scope
Open Sight Rimfire: any sporting rimfire w/ out a scope
20 Class: Any sporting centerfire rifle chambered for a caliber that begins with a 2
30 Class: Any sporting centerfire rifle chambered for a caliber that begins with a 3
40 Class: Any sporting centerfire rifle chambered for a caliber that begins with a 4
50 Class: This one is for the BIG guns. Any centerfire rifle chambered for a caliber that begins with a 5.
(Note: All scoped rifles will have scopes set no higher than 10 power)
Open sights: Any Centerfire rifle not scoped. Targets will be shot at 50 yards
Varmint: Heavy barreled centerfire rifles with scopes higher than 10 power
200 yard: Whatever you want as long as it is shot at 200 yards
All targets will be shot from a range of 100 yards (except for the 200 yard and open sight class)
Targets will be scored in two ways:
Tightest Group: Tightest 5 shot group on paper
Best paper: Center of bullseye to outside of farthest shot less half bullet diameter (as listed in speer reloading manual #13)
5 entries will be required to open each class. Each shooter will be allowed 2 entries per class, multiple targets may be submitted but the 2 entries will be tightest group submitted and best paper submitted. (This means you can’t take 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in one score of one class)
Entries will be accepted April 1, 2004- August 15, 2004
I don’t have the financial means to provide prizes for any category so unless someone wishes to sponsor a category by providing a prize, this match will be for bragging rights
Target to be announced (see my postal match post under general discussion for target discussion)
These rules are not etched in stone so feel free to offer any suggestions. also, just post and let me know you are interested and maybe what you are planning to shoot.
We'll put a sticky on this to keep it at the top of the forum for a while so the members can find it. jb.

Good idea. The .22 rimfire category interests me.

I'm wondering if we should put this in the Postal Match forum..... JB, do you care one way or the other?

Believe my son and I would like to do the rimfire event. Hopefully I catch a flight out of Iraq today.

Whatever you guys feel would be best, maybe leave it as a sticky for a little while till we gin up enough interest and then move it to a postal match forum. Marshall had mentioned setting up a new forum for this match
MikeG

If we move it, I'll leave a re-direct. Let me check with Marshall & RanchDog .....

JB, send a PM to Marshall. We're going to have a separate forum for your postal match for now, to see how it goes.

JB,
What distance are the rimfires shot at? Are they still 50 yards for open sights and 100 yards for scoped?
Thanks
jb12string
03-11-2004, 06:49 PM
oh jeez! what a good question. Hadn't really thought about it. I think we will keep the scopes shooting at 100 yards, just to keep it interesting, especially since there will probably not be any handloading and you will have to use factory loads. Official Ruling: 22 rimfires with scopes will be shot at 100 yards and 22 rimfires with open sights will be shot at 50 yards

Official Ruling: 22 rimfires with scopes will be shot at 100 yards and 22 rimfires with open sights will be shot at 50 yards
I'll assume this ruling applies to ALL rimfires, as I want to be shooting my .17HMR...Looking forward to it!

Yes AZ, you are absolutely correct, my bad, the ruling applies to ALL rimfires.

Is anyone else thinking of shooting an 45 caliber? I was thinking of trying the 45-90 out on it. Still trying to find the right combination of seating depth and crimp on the beast. I'm getting closer, but I'm not getting 'varmint' accuracy yet by a long shot. Having lots of fun trying though. Just curious if there were any other 'big' bores going to try the fun...

JB,
I forgot to ask about service rifles, like 03,M1,M1 carbine,M1A,ARs ECT. It would be a good excuse to knock the cobwebs off them. ;)
jb12string
03-22-2004, 06:35 PM
Yeah Big Medicine, go ahead and shoot em all. do you want a seperate category for the service rifles or do you want to shoot them by caliber class?
big medicine
03-24-2004, 11:50 AM
Heck JB, I would think we could just lump them in with every thing else in the Cal. Class to keep it simple. Just what I need, another excuse to go shoot. My lawn aint never gonna get mowed!

Been a couple days since I've been out here...anybody getting ready to punch some paper? The wind is supposed to drop below 40mph this weekend so I might get some load work done. Slowly getting there with the old Sharps...
JB, will you have that P.O. box pretty soon? Hope it's a big one...

I hope to get a PO box soon, Work has been super crazy lately

03-31-2004, 09:58 AM
One more day and we can start SHOOTIN'! I've got mine down to where I've only got to expand the target to a 3x5 Ft. piece of paper! That's why I was hoping the post office box was big. Still having trouble getting my seating depth right. We're supposed to get snow and rain this weekend so I'm gonna have to get out before it, but they haven't got a forcast right all year, why should they start now. LET THE GAMES BEGIN
jb12string
04-01-2004, 12:10 PM
Well guys, Its finally here! Bad News here: its raining and the rain is coming in sideways. Good news, The gunsmith called and my .223 trigger is fixed! I still haven;t got to get a p.o. box, so here is the deal for now: when you are ready to send me your first batch of targets, PM me and i will PM you back with my address. Good Luck

JB, I kinda wish I had your problem. We just had the driest March on record, over 100 years...1/10 inch and March is our second wettest Month! I can't wait to see the dry ones. Just horrible dry out here. Just south of us there's a fire that went from 500 to 2000 acres as soon as the wind picked up today. Even my cactus's are starting to suffer...
I've got a couple targets to send but nothing fancy. 5th shot flyer syndrome at it's best. "I think the sun was in my eyes that shot" type of thing. I was gonna get two youngsters shooting too, does it matter if they shoot the same guns as myself? They won't set any records but they're intrigued with a match that could conceivably be world wide. Gotta keep those kids interested or we'll lose 'em...

P.O. Box 234
Gardners, PA 17324
You guys may want to put 2 targets on top of each other since i am not planning on returning targets. I want to get out and shoot but the weather hasn't been nice enough merit dragging the bench out, did manage to get some trigger time in on the 223 out the kitchen window on the steel target. I may just wait till my membership at the local gun club goes through at the meeting the third wednesday in April.

I finally got my rifle shooting 'minute of turkey' I hope! I'm taking it and the two sons up next week to the Black Hills. Hope to get some more paper punched when we get back...
I just print my targets off the net, then photo copy them. I'm hoping it's coming out the right size, should be shouldn't it? The one with the colored center is sure nice for open sights...

I was out today testing loads for the .223 and i ran into a snag (see FUBAR 223 in rifles and rifle cartridges) so i am on hold with that rifle for at least 2 weeks i am guessing. tried to shoot my 10/22 on the beartooth targets and i lost count and put 6 on one target and 4 on the other. what a day! I was also to the post office and i haven;t recived anything since Big Med's last week. Trout season opens tomorrow so i am obligated to spend at least a few hours wetting a line so i am probably not going to get much done this weekend. good luck guys

JB,
I've got a few targets printed & ready to use. I have two major problems: 1. allergy season is in full swing so itchy eyes, etc. make it hard to get out to the range and
2. deciding which guns to use for your match.
Sooner or later you'll be seeing some of my targets.

JB12string,
I'm in the economically depressed area of PA . . . I guess that doesn't narrow it down too much, does it?
Actually, I'm in Northumberland County, which is a mix of old coal mines, agricultural areas and a few prisons which have sprung up over the last 10 years or so.
jb12string
05-31-2004, 05:46 PM

Baggsy-Wy
06-09-2004, 11:52 AM
Flustering! I can get three shots in the same hole, then 4 and 5 take on a life of their own as I envision greatness and accolades from all our fellow shooters. I'm working on another load that will negate shooter error. You can shoot it over your shoulder with a mirror and cloverleaf 'em!
Seriously, I've worked up some 7x57 loads for my 14 year old that we'll shoot a target or two with. And a 243 with open sights that might be fun to group.
I did do something interesting with the 45-90 though. When I found my best load for hunting this spring, I set the vernier for a touch high at 50 yards, then shot a target at 100 to see how much drop I was looking at. Darned if it isn't better 'paper' target than my best 50 yarder. PM me JB with your address again and I'll put a couple in the mail, mostly just to laugh at...

Well I guess I'll take that 2-7 off the new CZ Lux and put on the 8-32. I knew there was a reason it was sitting in my gun safe.
Looks like great fun. One question any specific type of target you want us to use?

I am skipping out of church early for a 3-D shoot then i hope to head for the rifle range. they are the standard beartooth targets from beartooth.com, infact, i think that Ranch Dog just modified his targets from that model.
http://www.beartoothbullets.com/misc/targets.htm
we use the bullseye targets, the black and white or color versions both work, whichever you prefer. I don't have the targets posted anywhere as i currently lack the technology to do so, but i will accept the donation of a scanner or digital camera :D just kidding, i hope to be able to borrow my parents scanner at some point and get the targets posted

Went to the range yesterday, getting ready for hunting season, and ending up wishing I had brought along your match targets! The group pictured below is 5 shots, 180gr Hornady bullets fired from my 30-06 with the old Leupold 4x scope. Who says you need a high powered scope? :D

OK,
I have scored all the targets (finally!) and i will post the top scores for each category now, the next chance i get i will run down the places for the rest of the targets in the class, i waived the 5 target rule due to lack of participation.
Rimfire scope
Ray Sendero .862 to bullseye and .762 group
Rimfire Open
Steelbanger .898 to bullseye and .854 group
Both rimfire targets were with 22LR's
20 Class
Ray Sendero .218 to bullseye and .388 group
fired w/ .270
30 Class
Steelbanger .431 to bullseye and .505 group
fired with .30-06
40 Class
Dr. A .681 to bullseye
Steelbanger .930 group
Both fired with 45-70's
All bullseyes except rimfire are less half a caliber and all groups except rimfire are less a whole caliber.
As time allows i will be ranking the remaining targets.
Great shooting guys, thanks for your participation and your paticence with me. I have enjoyed watching your targets come in over the past few months, unfortunatly i was only able to fire one target on my own for the 20 class and it didn't do as well as i had hoped. Perhaps next year someone with a little more time and the right equipment will host the non lever match to give you guys an even better postal match experinece. Hopefully i will be able to get ahold of a scanner and post the winning targets on the web sometime soon for all to enjoy. anyways, its getting late and i am starting to ramble. thanks again guys!

To the good Dr. A,
If it weren't for a flyer with one of my 400 Speers, I would have had a sub .5 group with the 45-70 too! Enough of this ranting.

Hi Guys,
New to this BB, but couldn't resist posting a late .30 cal entry just for fun (yes, I know its over).
Anyway, here is a couple 5-shot groups shot with my Parker-Hale M85 sniper rifle @100yds.

Tell me about it, You'd think for a guy holding a postal match, I'd be able to get at least one target shot for score, did manage to get ahold of my grandfathers M94 in 32 Win Special and punch 3 targets for Ranch Dog, nothing to write home about, but it was fun. hey what about a MikeG's postal match for next year?

I'm not really in a position to hold another postal match in the near future. I'd love to shoot one (with my bolt guns) but my wife and I've got a baby on the way and I have a feeling I won't have the free time next summer that I had this summer. PM me if you are interested in hosting one, I'll gladly help get you started

Hey JB,
That is GREAT news. Congratulations to you and your bride. Boy or girl, do you know or want to know? That is really awesome.
Godspeed and God bless,
Greg

The baby is due February 3, the day before the superbowl  Whether we find out what the baby is, is still under debate
