I'm considering putting a red dot scope on my .44 mag lever gun so I can hunt these varmint pigs at night (legal here in Texas).

Does anyone have any recommendations for brands or specifications? Any suggestions on mounts and rails?

Any advice is appreciated.

Joe, I'm using a weaver mount, and a tasco red dot 30mm on my .357, and a BSA on weaver mounts on my .44 mag, and have no complaints. Remember that the dot covers 4 inches at 100 yards. Most of your shooting will be at around 50 yards, so that means only two inches covered by the dot at that range. Try one and see how you like them, they are not target sights by no means, but they are easy to pick up in dim light, a lot eaiser than iron.

BSA makes good reddots, if you have the money a company called Aimpoint makes execelent reddot style sights, even a model with a 3moa dot @ 100yds and a 2x magnification. www.aimpoint.com. Post to let us know what you choose and how you like it, I am in the process of getting a 1894ss and may put a reddot on it.

I decided to get the Burris SpeedDot 135 and have ordered the 3moa dot version. The Aimpoints were more than I wanted to spend, but I'm sure they are nice. I'm shooting pretty close under low light conditions so I don't really need any magnification.

Hope to get it this week. Will let you know how I like it.

The BSAs and the Simmons Red Dots are cheap enough. I may give them a try too.

I put a bushnell reddot on my 30-30 GT. Don't remember the model, but it has the 4 different recticles. 3 moa dot, 10moa dot, 3 moa dot with 65 moa circle, and crosshairs. No magnification. I am amazed at the accuracy. 100 yd 2moa grps are easy. Yes, I know, how can you shoot smaller than the dot, don't know, but it does it. For real fun, take a poke at 200yds. If the dot is on it, you've got a hit, and real quick too. 6 inch grps at 200 yds are attainable. This is my first dot. I'm curious how the battery holds up in cold weather.
