I just got a G2, and Im not shure about what chambering to get for deer/bear hunting? I want something thats efective to around 175y, and has a mild recoil. Im considering rounds such as .30-30, 7-30. .35REM, or mabe the 300 Whisper(supersonic of corse). I know any of these will do on whitetail, but I dont know what kind of recoil these produce out of a Contender? I just wonder what hunting round to get, thats not punising. Im open to any sugestions.

Welcome to the board, gregarat - hope you will join us in the other discussion forums as well.

The amount of recoil for your T/C is going to depend on barrel length and chambering. Remember, the bigger and heavier the bullet to be fired the more recoil.

A handgun shot to 175 yds is a fairly long way - not saying it hasn't been done, just that most hunting handgunners normally limit their shots to 100 yds or less.

I've owned several big bore T/C's (.35 Rem, .375 Win, .44 Mag) and really didn't enjoy them quite as much as I did the 6.5x225 Win Ack Imp, 7mm TCU and the 7x30 Waters. For your consideration of deer hunting and something fairly available, the 7x30 Waters would probably be a good choice. Using the 140 gr bullet wouldn't be as severe in recoil as the larger cartridges. Get as long a barrel as you can manage - 14" to 16".

Gregarat:I use a 14" long 3030 Win Hunter (ported) barrel with a Aim Point red dot sight and a 14" long 44 Mag barrel with iron sights (for those rainy days) for my deer hunting. In the 3030, I use Sierra 130gr. Single shot handgun bullets and in the 44 Mag. I use Hornady 240gr XTP bullets. I limit all my handgun hunting to 100 yards. That’s why I also carry a rifle with me.Coyote222

Thanks everyone,
My gunshop is looking for a .30-30, or 7-30. My gundealer is also trying to track down a Millit multidot for my deer barrel. My .17HMR barrel is alredy in ,and a Nikon Monarch EER 2.5-8x is on its way here.
I carry a 6.5x55mm in the northern zone of my state, but in the southern zone, you cant big game hunt with a rifle. I use a .50 cal inline in the sothern zone, but smokepoles and moisture dont mix well.
With all the dumb hunting regulations in N.Y. state, its good to have the vercitility of a handgun.

If you are into wildcats, you might consider the .309 JDJ. This round is good to 300 yards with a 165 gr. Nosler BT at 2400 fps MV. Mine is a SSK rechambered 30-30 TC Hunter barrel (brake on it) and the pistol just sits there when you shoot it. No recoil to speak of at all. Down side is you are going to have to reload for it and form cases. Not a big deal, but if you do not reload, it really adds to the cost of shooting as you will spend roughly $400 just to set up and load your first box of shells, and wildcats are really not what you should start out reloading on.
For factory loads, I have nothing to add to what the others have said.

I have a 7-30 Waters w/ muzzle tamer, and it is very pleasant to shoot-recoil wise; muzzle blast is another thing entirely. If you get one with the 'tamer, don't shoot it without hearing protection, even when hunting. I tried it and it felt like someone was driving spikes in my ears. If you handload, the 7-30 is a good round. I use a 100 gr Barnes X and it gives me right at 2490 fps out of a 12" barrel, and is accurate too.

So how would the recoil from a "14 .30-30, compare to a .44mag revolver?

While (felt) recoil is a subjective thing, you shouldn't be hunting deer with a handgun that has light recoil unless you can get close enough to singe hair. The sport and the animal deserve better than that.

I have a ported 14" .30-30 with SSK scope mount and Burris 2-7x scope. I use the Hornady SSP in front of Reloder-7. I have killed deer with factory 150s FPs at over 125 yards with a good rest. With my new reloads, I don't see any problem with longer shots.
The recoil is about like a .44. Not hard to shoot. Getting used to shooting a pistol with a scope was the hardest part. Finding moving game in the scope took some getting used to.

Look on E-Bay for barrels, you should be able to get whatever you wnat for under $150.

I'm not going to trade, but if I had it to do again, I would get a .35 remington or 7-30 waters. One handles heavier bullets beter and the other shoots a bit flatter. The 7-30, 30-30, and .35 are all good options for deer and bear in commercial calibers. The JDJ series are some real wrist-breakers but great long range hunting loads.

Brent,
thanks for geting more spacific about how the "felt" recoil is. Im a very experienced rifle user, but I dont know alot about handguns yet. I do have a 4" .357. To help in building up to handling the recoil more easly. The point of geting a reddot, is so I can more quickly aquire the buck, or bear. I still havent found a stinkin .30-30 barrel. The gun show is next month so Im not in a huge hurry.
I am iching for the weather to break, so I can shoot my .17HMR.
