Today I ordered the youth model Marlin 336 Spikehorn lever action in 30-30 for my 11 year old grandson. If you have one, how does it shoot from an accuracy standpoint. Anyone shoot one over a chronograph. If so, what was the velocity?

Thanks

Nitro,

Surprised you got no responses to this thread. On the old Marlin Talk site there was a fair discussion on Spikehorns.

My thought was to get one, replace the butt stock with a full size stock and use it myself until my grandsons get old enough. My three grandchildren range from 5 1/2 down to almost 4 years old. When they get old enough I would put the "youth" length butt stock back on.

Does anyone know if an adult (replacement) butt stock can be put on and taken off without major smithing?

I was looking at one this weekend looks like a nice little rifle. Looks like it would work great for out the window outfitters

The Spikehorn 30-30 came in today. It is short, light, and very quick to the shoulder. It would make a great deer stand rifle. Many times a deer will approach your stand from an unexpected direction. That means unconventional shots from undesirable positions, like left handed, one handed, left handed one handed, etc. This little Spikehorn should accomodate almost any contorted position that it takes to place the crosshairs on a deer. Also, the recoil is mild enough that it shouldn't knock you out of the deer stand. That almost happened to me when I shot one from an elevated stand with a Browning BLR in .358 Winchester. Now, I always wear a safety harness.

Can't go this weekend, but next weekend I will have it at the range with six different brands and weights of factory ammo along with 125 gr. and 150 gr. handloads.
