View Full Version : Another pre64 Question
I need to take my newly acquired pre-64 model 94 apart and I need some help with one part. The dissambly instructions I have are from 1980. My question has to do with the link plate. The instructions I have shows a screw as the pivot point for the plate that is to be removed to get the plate off, but my rifle has a pin for a pivot point and a screw in the link plate itself.
To remove it, do I drive out the pin or remove the screw underneath?
Remove the link pin screw first, then push the link pin out. The link pin screw holds the link pin in place on the pre-64s and on the post-1990 models when Winchester brought it back.
DLS, I am a little confused. There are no link plate pin screws. Are you thinking of the screw in the upper part of the receiver that has to be removed so you can take out the pin that connects the upper part of the finger lever to the bolt?
The pin I am talking about is the pivot point for the plate( called the link plate in my book) on the bottom of the receiver that pivots down when you work the lever. The instructions in my 1980 book shows this to be a screw, whereas on my rifle it is a solid pin. Also, my rifle has a screw in the forward portion of this plate and the one with a screw as the pivot point does not have the screw in the forward portion of the plate.
The small screw just in front of the lever, on the link, is the link pin screw, it holds the link pin in place. The link pin is what the link pivots on like you said (never heard it referred to a link plate before). On the post-64, to the 1990 model, the link pin itself was threaded on one end and screws in to the receiver. (the link is the part the lever passes thru)
Check this diagram and see if we're even talking about the same part, #4494. http://www.urban-armory.com/diagrams/win94pre.htm
I think I'm straight now. The plate in question is 4994. It looks like screw 4894 needs to be removed before I can remove pin 4794 which will allow the plate to be removed.
Thanks a lot.
DLS, I tried to remove the link pin, but it didn't budge. I first removed the screw and then tried to push the pin out. When it didn't move, I used a punch and tapped it with a rubber mallet and it still didn't move. I was trying to move it right to left. I didn't try left to right, but it shouldn't make any difference. I suspect that due to its age, it probably has some dried hard grease that is holding it, but wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something before I tap on it harder to get it out.
Thanks.
ejc,
It maybe gunked-up like you say, soak it with penetrating oil or just some oil. When you say tapping right to left, is that with the carbine upside down? If your looking at the bottom of the gun, try tapping left to right.
