Hello guys Ruttinbuck here new member this AM.
I am developing handloads for my new and first 300 winmag.I will be hunting mule deer and maybe bighorn sheep. The hornady Amax and interbond bullets in 165/168 grain are looking promising and I am asking for opinions or experiences good or bad with these bullets.
Thank you in advance Ruttinbuck

Welcome to the board, Ruttinbuck - Glad to have you here and hope you will join us in all the other forums.

Hornadys are my most favored bullet. Especially with the advent of the V-Max, A-Max, SST and Innerbond. The only ones I've used, besides the standard interlocks, have been the V-Max, A-Max and SST's. Accuracy has been great and performance on mule deer has been satisfying. Haven't loaded any of the Innerbond (still have boxes of the others on the shelf), but any Hornady should perform great.

The weights you mention should do well, although the 300 WM is most noted for the 180 grain loads.

Thanks Kdub, when you say performance has been satisfying , do the Amax expand and give up their energy like you expect ? no blow ups without penetration?

According to Hornady, the A-MAX bullets are designed "primarily for match shooting". I think you will be much happier with the Interbond, which have a bonded core and can be expected to hold together much better, especially at high impact velocities (read "close range").

I have used an A-max(left an amax in my pocket) on Idaho's small whitey's, but at much slower velocities than your 300. I wouldn't use one again, and at your speed wouldn't reccomend it unless you were in a REAL pinch with VERY light deer.

Ruttinbuck -

the Hornady V and A-Max bullets have been used in the .22 Hornet and the .223 Rem with extremely good accuracy results. These are not used on game animals, only reserved for varmits.

The SST has been used in the 6.5-06 with very satisfying results on mule deer - 275 yd shot, complete penetration and the inside looked like a mixmaster had gone off. Pencil sized entry, quarter sized exit.

The Interbonds have not been loaded yet as explained above. Also, the selections are pretty limited at this point - I'm sure Hornady will expand the line in the future.
