View Full Version : Is it the gun, or the mount?

I just bought a Weaver #90 one-piece base for a 39 Carbine. The screws in the old gun are MUCH smaller in diameter than those which came with the base. Thus, I'm unable to mount the base using the larger screws. I also checked, and it appears the base is drilled properly for the size of the screws which came with it.:)
Did Marlin go to larger screws sometime in that last three decades? Would I contact Weaver about smaller screws? Should I try the two-piece(#19 & 29?) set-up instead?
Thanks.

Well, I went back to the shop with the actual screws from my gun to see about the mount. They had one more in stock, and it was packaged with the same oversize screws. So, the clerk handed over a brand-new 39A for me to examine. The screws were just the same as mine I'd brought along.
The clerk thought maybe Weaver had simply put the wrong mount altogether into the packages.(?)
However, it seemed like it sat properly on the receiver to my eyes. So, I went to another shop in town. They handed over a #90 mount, and it's the same story! Two-screws included which are too big for the gun.
FWIW, the first mount I bought was packed with olive green inner backing. The one I checked at the second store was navy-blue, which I think is what I'm used to seeing with Weaver products.
Now, I'm going to have to call Weaver on Monday to find out what gives!
