I just got a 1894SS and I am looking into sight possibilities for it. I don't want to scope it, but the factory sights just won't cut it for me. What set up do you suggest for 100yd and less deer/plinking gun. I have had experience with XS Ghost rings, but would like something a bit more accurate like a true peep sight, but I have seen some that hang off the rear and require a hammer extension. I like the look of firesights but have never used one in the field. Any suggestions or tales of past experience would be greatly appreciated.

If the gun were mine,I would drill and tap the side of the reciever(if not done at the factory) and then install a Williams "Fool Proof" peep. They are rust proof, click adjustable and more rugged than any micrometer peep on the market.

I have used them for over a generation on my levers and they are great.

I put a WGRS on mine. You have to drill and tap one hole 1/2 inch forward of the existing rear scope pair so that it will not hang off the back of the receiver. I think it looks much better than an XS or FP sight (less obtrusive). I use an .050 aperture at the range and either the factory .093 or screw it out and just use the barrel when in the field. If you hadn't of drilled the hole and mounted it a little forward would you have had to use a hammer extension? With the WGRS were you able to use the factory front sight or did you replace it with a front firesight or something of the sort. By the way, thanks for the reply and the pictures, they really help alot.

Like the look of that set up...may just have to adapt a rifle to that sight and give it a try.

It will hang off the back and look bad, but you wouldn't need a spur. A picture sent me by a member on Marlin Talk (can't remember who):

I use the factory front filed off to square post. The factory rear is lowered one notch and folded. It does not get in the sight picture and is available for back up if needed. I also think it looks better than a dovetail blank.

I also tried it on the front scope pair. It worked, but looked funny and wasn't as effective as it is on the back of the receiver.

I have a 1894P and installed the Williams Fp 336 on it. Its a screw in op. Goes in the top rear top scope mount holes. Newer Marlins have no side holes for these sights. Me I don"t want to do any drilling or change what can't be put back to original condition. You can get the less $ williams which will also work. I would recomend the Hivol sights over the fire sights by Williams for the front. They come in lime green which is a lot easier to see quickly. Works for me.

The FP-336 hangs off the back very much like the WGRS in the last picture. If you're happy with it like that it's fine with me.

As for drilling or other modifications... We have a difference in philosophy. I buy my rifles for shooting. I do what I like and make them mine. 100 bucks more in my estate won't make up for a lifetime of pleasures lost.
