I bought an old Mossberg model 152 from my wife's uncle about 2 years ago. I paid $100 dollars. I soon found out that this little semi-auto rimfire was the most accurate rifle that has ever been in my gun case.

Since then I have put more than 10,000 rounds through it, and replaced the firing pin. I have broke down the action many times to clean all the gunk cause by the dirty burning cheap bulk ammo that it shoots so well. And the ole 152 is still able to shoot in the .60"@ 50yard range.

Inspite of the frequent jams that happen, I find myself grabbing it rather than the prestine Marlin 39A that sits beside it or the Remington Speedmaster. The Marlin only likes the high dollar ammo, while the Remington doesn't like any darn thing. The Mossberg shoots the $8 a brick CCI BLazers, and out shoots the others with authority.

I really believe that the old Mossbergs are a very good value, have the capablity of being very accurate, and because they are overlooked at the gun shows, are priced super low.

Does anyone else have the same experience? I would love to hear ya'lls opinions and experiences.

I think Mossberg is the most under rated 22 rifle on the market in it's day. They shoot good, accurate, cheep.I have a whole bunch of them. ;)

I have never had the pleasure of owning a Mossberg of any kind, but my neighbor has an old Mossberg .22, I'm not even sure of the Model, but it's a bolt action, with I believe a five shot magazine. It is one very accurate little rifle and he tells me it has accounted for more game (squirrels, woodchucks, rabbits) than any other firearm he owns. From what I've seen at the several gunshows I attend each year, they are one of the few bargains still to be had, and intend to get one very soon. Glen

I have a 151K with the O.F. Mossberg & Sohn on the barrel. I also must admit that it is one of the most accurate and enjoyable rifles I have ever owned. Amazing what simple things are enjoyed the most.

I have a 142A that I bought second hand 46 years ago. It was the first gun I ever bought with my grass mowing money. I paid $20 for it. I still have it, shoot it and it's been re-blued and the stock refinished. It's a great little gun.

Has anyone tried the 702 Plinkster. I have seen one and like it. It would be great for younger shooters.

I've become addicted to my Mossberg 22's.
I came across a model 46A (tube fed), that I mounted a Tasco 8X32X44 and recently aquired a 44US(B) that I just mounted a weaver T36. Talking about fun to shoot! :p

Attached is the 1st time out with the 46A, 5-shots, bulk Win. ammo and 25yds.

I have got a Mossberg bolt action single shot with peep sites that sits on the back porch for quick dispatch of unwanted critters that frequent my back yard. It is deadly! We have given it no Maintenance that I can remember and shot whatever is on sale (usually the Federal bulk) through it. It has killed more groundhogs, squirrels, possums, skunks and coons than I can count. Bought it for $30 at a garage sale about 15 years ago. The way it is set up with sites, it looks like it was some sort of target gun. Wish it had a magazine. At work now so can't check the model #. Never paid much attention to the old gal. It is getting some surface rust on the barrel from the moisture on the porch. Although I take pristine care of my hunting guns, this one as been neglected over the years but keeps on killing those pests! JOHN

I have got a Mossberg 702 Plinkster and I must say it is the best .22 I have ever shot. I mean it's got a 10 round clip magazine, front hooded sight and adjustable rear sight. It is truly the best .22 out there! :D :) ;) ;) :) ;)

Now you are really bringing back the memories.

Back about 1950, my friend Jerry had a Mossberg 46M. This is a tube fed, bolt action .22 with a full length stock and neat peep sights. Jerry and I spent many hours in the woods with this rifle and I often borrowed it for long stretches of time. I wanted to buy it but my Dad didn't agree.

Jerry passed away three years ago. I don't know what happened to that rifle, but I recently found one on Auction Arms - naturally, I bought it! Every time I handle this rifle I remember Jerry.

I remember wanting a Mossy 152 so badly when I was 12...used to hang around Monkey Wards, admiring all the rifles, and that one, with the fold-down fore-end, was my heart's desire.
But time and limited funds (always something I needed more) worked against my ever owning one of these neat little rifles. I love my Rem.12A and 550, and my Win. 72...all steel and walnut classics...but have long lusted for the Mossberg of my dreams.
57 years later, thanks to a generous brother in law, I have it...almost. He chanced on a 152K, the open-sight version of the 152, at a gun show. and aware of my wanting, made me a present of it. There was some rust, and dirt, and pitting, though the stock and bore were pretty good. Not too surprised, as even sadly neglected .22's often retain decent bores. Kind of hard-used...it needs lots of TLC. A project for Spring. Tried it without cleaning and with only the open sights, and it shot into about 3/4" at 30 yards...not bad. And it's bound to get better with a good dunging-out and better sighting. I couldn't be happier if it were an original 152. Well, maybe...;)
My one other Mossberg experience with another sadly neglected Mossy...a 151 belonging to a friend...confirms what you guys say: with a little TLC, Mossbergs shoot GOOD!!!

Shortly after he was discharged from the US Army in 1945, Dad bought a Mossberg model 152 semi-auto .22 long rifle and a Stevens 22/410 O/U. I was born the same year.

When I was 10 years old, Dad gave both guns to me and I still have them. From 1955 to the present, I have put tens of thousands of rounds through that Mossberg and it always performed flawlessly, except when dirty.

Mine is a mossberg NEW HAVEN 740T .22 Magnum. Bolt action, five round clip. Fires beautifully though the only thing it needs is a trigger kit to lighten it up. Its realy heavy. Got it doing 1/4 inch groups at 25 yards last night after it was shooting about eight inches left and down- need to spend some quality time at 100 yards getting it spot on. Need a bi pod first though... ;)

Have had a Mossberg 144LS for many years, when i started to shoot competively indoor the only 22 i had at the time was this 144 had to lenghten the stock a little to make it fit better.
I changed the sight bases from the mossberg to a redfield rear to use a palma sight i had bought a few years before and installed a two step front, this sight when used properly will have the 22 sighted at 50 ft, or 50yrds dead on (this on the high ramp) when you move to the lower ramp dead on 100yrds.
At 50ft and 50 yrds have shot many clean targets with this set up, now have a Win. 52D with same sight base setup.

About a year ago, my dad gave me the 142A that had originally been bought by my grandfather. I've been unable to determine its age. Does anyone have any clues about this?

I have an old Mossberg 144, thompson benchmark, and a kimber svt. The Mossberg would outshoot the benchmark every time, until i used Tubb's final finish on the benchmark, now they a about equal shooters. An interesting note, I practice with weighed and measured winchester x-pert 36 grain bought in bulk 500's. At 50 mtrs. they are just fair shooting around .5", but at 100 and 200 meters they group tighter than
wolf's, elays, or fiocchi's.
Any way , I've put the old peepsights back on the mossberg and shoot silhouettes, a bit heavey but fun.

Uncruel:

According to the "Blue Book of Gun Values" the Mossberg 142A was manufactured 1949 - 1957.

I have a 144LSA that has a Mossburg rear peep and globe front sight. It will out shoot all of my other 22's except the Annie free rifle. It's weight is just under 7 lbs. so it will make the light rifle class in 3P.

I see the value to be around $135.00- $140.00.Takedown, .22lr, long and short. Tubular magazine holds 15lr, 18 longs, and 22 shorts. 26 inch barrel. Weighs 7 1/4 lbs. Has Micrometer click peep, open rear and hooded ramp front sight. Pistol grip stock with cheekpiece. Beavertail forarm and swivel studs. Was made in 1937 and 1938 only.

Hope this helps,

Steve

Yep, I just bought one of these on Friday from my local Wal-Mart. With a box of 550 Federal .22 longs, a spare magazine it came to $107, but that's with my slave discount.

I put about 300 rounds through it at the range that night, had 2 malfunctions and a sore thumb from all that loading... I'm so rusty with rifles it's unreal, but I managed to keep everything in the kill zone of one of those foot high people targets at 30yds, although I could barely see the dark front sight post in the gloomy range.

As a first baby-steps or plinking gun, you really can't beat the price ($92 with one mag and a receiver lock) and although you can feel it's cheap (hollow stock is the most telling point) it seems pretty sturdy.

Hope this was helpful :)

I have an original 151 Mossberg that my father gave me a few years ago. He purchased it when he was discharged from the army in 1952. It is in original condition and still have the hang tag and papers that came with it. I looked for years for a nice scope to fit it , a 4m4. Last year I found one a NIB 4m4 and snatched it up quick. I think it looks and works great!!

My experience w/ Mossberg rifles. At 16 I was one of the best small bore NRA shooters in NY. I beat members of the Marine corp. shooting team using a Mossberg Model 44. I was surprised to see this thread. I am in the process of buying 2 all stock, complete 44's. Mossberg makes a great .22. JP

PS, My last target that day was 25 perfect bulls on a 5 bull NRA target.
