I just got a Pachmayr pre-fit decelerator recoil pad for my dad's Marlin 336. When I test fit the pad, it fit well except for the toe of the stock where it was about 1/8th of an inch or so short of the end of the stock. :( My question to you is do I cut the stock back an 1/8th of an inch, sand it back or send the pad back and have the gunsmith install one? My dad wants me to just install it and not worry about it but it just doesn't look right... I'm open to suggestions... CEJ

CEJ... It is really tough to get a good fit on a pre-fit pad, sometimes your lucky and sometimes your not. Of course, it's the fact that you are dealing with a wood stock. I passed on the frustration of exactly what your facing and just had a gunsmith install a grind-to-fit LimbSaver on my 444P and 336D. They look like they came from Marlin with the pads installed.

Ranch dog,
if you don't mind me asking, how much did a gunsmith charge you to intall a grind-to-fit pad, I am debating on buying a prefit pad from my .444 or going to a gunsmith but I'm not sure what a fair price for that job is and I don't want to get ripped off. Thanks so much.
Matt

Ranch Dog - Thanks for the advice! I too went through the debate and thought I'd take a chance. Oh, well off to the gunsmith this weekend! mattpair - figure about 50 to 60 bucks to do the job depending on the price of the pad you choose. I've always used Pachmayr pads but I'll look into the limbsaver. It's only going on a .35 Remington.. CEJ..

I have several different Pachmayr's but I must say that I do favor the LimbSaver after shooting it. I have no problem pounding through 40, 50 heavy loads out of my 444 in one session

The installation with the price of the pad was just under $45.
