Today was the first time to the range with my new Ruger 22/45 and it jammed up on me most of the time. The folks at Ruger told me they put a protectant on the gun that gums up after one week. So first thing you have to do is get out the solvent and clean it. I read the manual but sure missed that. Admittedly, that might have been a shortcoming on my part. However, that's one detail that I would have put in BIG BOLD LETTERS in the owners manual.

i have by-passed that step and oiled everything really well before, but the good cleaning is always a good thing, besides giving the gun a scrub, it's good to see the innards before use to make sure there isn't any burrs or boogers.

I'm picking up my 22/45 tonight. Bought a box of CCI Mini-Mags for the range. The range rental was very accurate with those rounds with no malfunctions. What brand of ammo were you shooting? Regarding cleaning...ALWAYS clean a new gun before firing. Lots of gunk from the factory.

Amen, AJ. The first thing I do with any firearm that's NIB is to completely field strip it, clean it, and fieldstrip/reassemble it again a couple of times. The manufacturers don't spend any time or money on cleaning after final production, and, as you said, there's lots of stuff that doesn't belong in there. And I don't really expect most semi-automatic weapons to perform their best until I've run about a brick of fodder through them.

Since these are my first two handguns and particularly my first semi-auto pistol I would have never thought of it. But I'm learning!

I just bought the Ruger 22/45 5.5" bbl. I stripped and cleaned it before i went to the range although it was one of the cleanest weapons that i have ever seen right out of the box. Keep us posted ref. ammo likes and dislikes. My weapon seems to shoot good with a varity of ammo.---GOOD SHOOTIN'----pruhdlr

I have a new 22/45 and have been shooting CCI Mini-Mag's by the 100 with no problems. I also understand that Dynapoints are good also and they are $10 per 500...
