For all of the Ruger #1 and #3 fans - I forgot to mention the KING of Ruger #1s - the .577 Nitro Express!
J.D. Jones, of SSK fame allowed me to fire his own .577 Nitro Express in his backyard in Winterville, Ohio.
With the mercury recoil reducers and a Kick-Eez spring-loaded attachment on the buttstock it was not even a bit unpleasant to shoot. Acuracy, offhand, was exceptional, allowing me to hit a leaf fallen from a tree at about 80 yards.
I believe that the current price tag is around $3,500 - $4,500.00, and that;s a deal if youy l0ook at the cost of an original Farquarson in a serious African caliber.
I've been saving my money and will - sooner or later - order one of my own and drag it off to Tanzania. But first I have to save the $10,000.00 I will need for an elephant tag.
I think that JD also builds .600 NItro express versions of the #1, but I can't really see a need for the extra horsepower unless you are a PH, and then a single shot, no matter how powerful, doesn't make sense. But Need and WANT are entirely different things.

great rifle/calibre combo!!
My 577 Sniders are black powder and shorter cases, I can load them up fairly heavy, but... nothing like the Nitro Express, that's a 3" case right?

I stumbled across a Web site not too long ago that boasted a "700 Nitro". I don't remember the claimed ballistics, but it was developed using a modified 50BMG and a 1000 grain bullet. I guess the next step is just plain artillery rounds...

Ross Seyfried is a fan of the .577 Snider. He wrote a lovely, as usual, article for Rifle in September or October of 2000 about Ruger #1 rifles.
The .577 Nitro that JD builds is a full 3 inch monster. I must admit that before I fired the "shoulder canon" an ertant thought went through my mind: "Well, if the recoil is as bad as I think it's going to be and I miss the charging __________( insert whatever nasty you prefer)I can always eject quickly and hide in the empty case!"
That said, the recoil, with the recoil taming devices, and the ONLY muzzle break that I have ever seen that actually worked to PUSH the muzzle down, was no worse, if at all worse, than my .458 WInchester magnum Mauser. I will definatelt NOT be shooting groups from a bench without a sissy bag, but offhand it hurt not a bit for three rounds.
I must hasten to point out that I am NOT a fan of muzzle breaks - BUT - in his typical way JD has done what I have seen nobody else do - his break works! Leaves fell from the trees above our heads, and I was glad that there were no small aircraft flying above the muzzle, but the muzzle stayed down with little effort on my part.
The highest praise that I can offer to a rifle builder is when I plunk down my own cash - and JD will be getting a hunk of mine for a .577 sooner or later.

That rifle on a bench would not be fun!
At least that big bore allows for a lower pressure build up but plenty of thump. I saw footage of a guy firing a 577 T-Rex, that is just not a nice cartridge!

Dear Jeb -
J.D. Jones is an exceptional man - and to shoot his big boomers you must be another of those exceptional men who, like me, enjoys those beautiful rifles that will flatten anything if you do your job right.
The .600 JDJ cartridge and rifle are such tools.
Enjoy!
