Hello from Scotland~

Im just starting a new project stripping my Krico semi-auto .22 which i bought second hand about ten years ago.
I alway "assumed" the barrel was free flaoted....

But now i find there is a lot of wood contact after the metal block that fits into a notch in the barrel. I have now free floated the barrel and stripped the old heavy varnish off.

Is there any "real" bennift to free floating a .22 LR barrel ???

Im going to fit an adjustable butt pad, and Truoil finnish the stock fit a bi-pod and a HUGE scope ! main objective is sniping bunnys ! :D Ive killed amny hundreds of rabbit with this rifle last year i had the barrel cut down from 21" to 14" and it has a parker hale silencer fitted.

I will keep you posted regarding this current project of mine and will post a "before" photo and a "after".........

I get a 403 error-forbidden entry- on the picture-wouldn't mind seeing it as I have a Krico 200- very accurate for a semi-auto...

This model Krico is both semi-auto and single shot which is best when using a silencer. This is another before photo

The barrel is now "free-floated" (does not touch the wood) and has the varnish removed , dents lifted, hairs removed and sanded with 180 grit before being sealed with 50/50 mix of white spirt and varnish.

Currently, there is no U.S. importer for Krico...hasn't been one in a good long while (think Beeman handled them last). Have an older 311 I've been pleased with.

Free floating can help a .22LR, but more from a consistant zero point of view than from any real promise of an accuracy advantage. Not knowing your model Krico very well, don't know how well the action is stablized in the stock...know that free flroaing with out adding a stable platform often casues more problems than it cures.

I'd shoot it without...then try free floating. Can always add a bit of upward pressure if you find that to be a help.

Englander-

That photograph looks like a Krico 260 to me. The 260 was marketed and sold in the U.S. as Tradewinds model 260.

These rifles were an exceptional value with 2 stock bolts snugging the receiver into the wood, and a counter bored muzzle- Krico ran a chambering reamer into the muzzles.

My 200 is stocked in Beech, and I have not found floating the barrel to be a necessity yet- I am getting fairly tight groups with the rifle as is, shooting standard velocity target ammunition. Looking forward to more pictures....

Hello from Scotland~

Ive have posted more photos on accurate forum rim fire section.

I have never really given much thought to me Krico it was cheap second hand, and has always been a tool rather than a beloved firearm. However over the years i have grown to aoppreciate her, especially her locking cocking bolt. Friends who have Rugers semi-auto's have been very jelous of this future. I tend to shoot her locked on single shot when stalking rabbit as to only get the "thunk" of the sub-sonic bullet impact on bunny ! :p

As to the model ?? or age ?? mine has the following remarks :

KRICO KRIEGESKORTE & CO. BMBH. STUTTGART-MADE IN GERMANY-CAL .22 LR 275***

On the barrel the it also has a dimond shaped proof stamp with a tiny "Z" to the right. There is the same mark on the action along with 72 and what looks like a antler point away from it ? date ??

American guns imported here all have Britsh reproof stamps with the date which is handy ! But European guns do not seem to require reproofing ?? Guess we dont trust your yank proof ! ;) Probably simply an excuse to tax them again ! :(

sorry...im not good with gun terms (im a newbie at guns)...wut does free floated barrel mean?

Free floating a barrel is removing any wood from the forarm that touches the barrel up to a couple of inches from the action. The reason this is done is uneaven pressure from several points in the barrel channel pressing against the barrel can cause accuracy problems.

On big game rifles this will often produce better accuracy, though some rifles respond well to about seven pounds upward pressure at the very end of the forarm. Many ruger 77's come factory bedded this way.

There is an easy way to tell if free floating will help accuracy. First though is to find out if the barrel on your rifle is already free floated. Just get a dollar bill and try sliding it down the barrel between the barrel and the barrel channel. If it will slide down to within several inches from the action your barrel is already free floated.

If it is not just remove the barreled action from the stock. Place an old credit card or two between the stock and the barrel just in front of the recoil lug under the barrel. Tighten the action back into the stock and shoot it from a good bench rest at the range. If groups improve then free floating will benifit your rifle.
