I acquired my first 9422 this past weekend. Serial # F68,xxx. Being a collector of original Winchester levers, I was a little disappointed with the wood to metal fit, some gaps are visible. Nevertheless, I am happy to have this in 22Mag. Two questions: 1) Who has experience with the Marbles Tang sight? I am less than thrilled with the current Lymans due to their cheaper manufacturing but have not viewed/inspected the Marbles. Does Marbles use rubber o-rings, do they seem to function correctly, does it look right mounted? 2) Should I choose to acquire another 9422M and convert to 17HMR, are there any concerns relative to pointed bullets in the magazine tube resting against rimfire bases and under recoil (causing a discharge)?

Miinor note, this gun had the enlarged lever, like a John Wayne or The Rifleman. Where can I locate a standard size lever?

Thank you!

They are now producing it in .17, in both standard and Legacy configurations.

I attend a lot of gun shows and I am always curious when I see a gun that has been significantly altered from its original condition. Not only is the value decreased most often functionality is compromised.

The 9422 you purchased was manufactured with the "John Wayne" lever. They are manufactured without them. Secondly you are wondering about converting a 9422m to .17 HMR when Wincherster already manufactures them as well. Why not purchase the gun you want instead of purchasing a gun you don't want and the buthering it to make it something you do want? I am sorry but I just don't understand this type of thinking. Its ruined a lot more guns than its improved.

You have an early 9422M, 1st or 2nd year. It was definitely NOT made with the large lever. They did put the large lever on a few of them from the factory but not until the mid 1990's and not very many. It takes about 5 minutes and no tools to swap levers on those guns. I have a couple standard levers in excellent condition if you want to trade that large lever. Or, you can get one straight from Winchester or Brownells. About the 9417 .... they made them for a short time but you'll pay dearly for one now, it's the way to go rather than try to convert a 9422M. The pointed bullets are a non-issue in a tube feed .17HMR ..... there's next to no recoil and it's a rimfire .... the bullet points are touching the center of the next cartridge and not the rim where the primer is located. I have a Marble's on a Marlin 39 that I took apart to lower it. The model for that rifle has plenty of up elevation but cranked all the way down it still would have required a much higher front sight. There are no "0" rings inside, just 8 tiny ball bearings and a small spring. Mine was more loose than I cared for. I put a oversized locating pin inside and wrapped the threads with teflon tape on the portion never visible inside the knurled collar. It's fairly decent now, before the only time it was truly tight was when cranked down hard to the lowest setting. The windage and elevation clicks work very well on the sight. As you know you'll have to drill and tap two mounting holes in tang for the Marble's sight .... permanent alteration to the gun. NECG makes a nice all steel receiver sight that will mount in the grooves on top for about $85 .... it's really the only good receiver sight made for these guns.
