My preference is the M1 Garand and I shoot one in the CMP matches at the local gun club. I must admit a fondness for the Belgian FN49 and the L1A1. The Russian Tokarev Model 1940 is fun to shoot. Do you have a favorite? All the best...

Love those you mentioned. Picked up a French MAS 49/56 when they were around cheap (2 actually) in .308. Darn things shoot pretty good and function well. Best 250.00 I spent on surplus guns.

The M1 Garand and FN-FAL are my favorites. I am thinking of picking up another M1 that needs a new barrel. I will have it done in 8x57mm Mauser to take advantage of all the cheap ammo available right now.

M1 Garand, H-K 91/G3 (not really gas operated though), Kalashnikovs with milled receivers, like the Valmet M-62 and M-76 (in 7.62x39).

My favorite is the M1-Garand without question. However I am not going to raffle off my M14 or 30 caliber carbine anytime soon.
