I have a box of Hornady 350 grain round nose in 45-70 and I was wandering if they would be safe to use in my marlin 1895. I usually use flat nose 350 grains or 405's, but I accidentally ordered the round nose and didn't realize it until it was too late to return them. I find conflicting info in some reloading literature about the Marlin. Thanks
Yes you can use them just fine. I had used them for a couple of years before switching to the flat nose. Make sure you seat them to 2.55 and they cycle just fine.

Believe you are worried about the non-flat nose resting on the primer of the round ahead of it in the magazine tube. It's pretty round...and soft lead...but the recoil is pretty fierce.
I notice Hornady lists loads fr lever guns using that bullet and doesn't publish warnings (at least not in the 4th edition) about the possibility of chain firing in the magazine. I've loaded them without ill effects..but admit it made me a bit uncomforatable after the fact and I stopped loading those bullets.
Will give them credit for being more stoutly constructed than the 300gr. bullets.
Use them all the time in the 1895LTD1 with fairly stout loads and have no problem. They are a good bullet.

I use the "M" ported afoot and ahorse and I do not load for it ,I use the factory 450's in 350 gr Hornaday and it does all I ask of it.
I have used the 350 RN in my 45-70 and 45-90 Winchesters for years without any problems. My loads using these bullets are "stout", too.

I thought they would be ok, but I just wanted a little positive reinforcement. I must admit that I will probably not load them max!!!

I've used the Hornady 350gr. RN in my 1895CB since I've owned it and they have worked very well with no problems and my loads are quite stout. Respectfully, M.R.

Kentucky:
I asked this same question to a Marlin factory rep. at the NRA convention in Mpls. some years ago. He said the RN bullet was fine in their tube-fed guns, but don't use a full metal jacket or solid. So far I haven't used them but do like the looks of that 350 gr.
