Hey Guys,
My Remington 788 .223 keeps wanting to go off when i close the bolt with the saftey off. I decided to do a little detective work last night and the spring looks like it was cut off by someone which makes sense because it has a light trigger pull. Also, i didn;t notice the problem until after i stripped the bolt down to clean the firing pin, but, it also didn;t start right away after i stripped the bolt. I am thinking that the trigger is probably the problem and as a solution, just replacing the trigger with a timney trigger. Th info i have seen on the timney trigger says that i need to use the original bolt stop and saftey. Anyone have any advice on anything i have mentioned in this post. Does it sound like i am on the right track?

jb,

You don't say which spring was cut so it is kind of hard to pass judgement on that. Most likely the former owner adjusted the engagement too fine. Take the gun out od the stock and watch through the hole on the right side of the housing which reveals the sear engagement. Close the bolt while watching the sear and you will probably see that there is virtually no engagement. The engagement screw is the one in the back of the trigger housing, back it out to increase engagement. This will be a whole lot cheaper than a Timney.

Weight of pull and overtravel are changed by the front screws. I believe the top one is the overtravel and the bottom is the pull adjustment.

Since you say that the gun fires, as opposed to following down when the bolt is closed I am sure this will correct your problem. The engagement is just too small to hold against the pressure of the firing pin spring.

Errrr, most 788s don't have adjustable triggers like the 700 series do. Cutting the trigger spring will lighten the pull, but as my old blacksmith says, "Cut it off twice and it was still too short".
