Well Guys I am sorry to inform you that the 357 Winchester model 94 does not take kindly to the 38Spl. case.
I had reported that we have a 357 Trapper that feeds them with out a hitch, So I reported that there was no problems judging from our own experiance.
Well A gunshop told me today to hang on to that little rifle because I was one of few .
I took an uberti out today and with (out thinking) loaded it with 38 case's Took some time to get them out of the tube.
You can not load 38Spl. in 357 rifles.
Seems the Marlin 94 is the only rifle in 357 "that will" I am told.
Well you learn something every day.

Harry:
My new Ranger Compact AE in .357 handles the .38's as well as the .357's. I did pull the action down and use a fine round Arkansas stone to polish the carrier a little, just enuf to smooth it a little . Some 600 grit wet or dry on a a dowel rod would have done some thing same. Also used some J-B's bore paste to clean the chamber and chamber mouth up. Prior to that the 38 cowboy ammo with the soft lead round nose was a little 'stickier' to feed, but did feed and function with no jams. Now is slicker 'n snot on a door.

Well if a smith can not get some to feed the 38 cartride while some have no problem with the shorter case from the factory is beyond me .
Our little trapper 357 was great right out of the box . It would feed and shoot SWC and the round nose with out a hickup.
The other trapper in 44 Mag is great also . It was a bit stiff out of the box but worked in to be one of the smoothest winchester 94AE that I have seen.
Guess it is the luck of the draw. :D

My 94AE Ranger Compact has fed with 100% reliability every variety (over a dozen) of 38 Special, and 357 mag I have tried right out of the box including lead SWC. I have been working the action while watching TV in the evenings the last few weeks, and it has smoothed up considerably. Maybe I was lucky too, or maybe your gunsmith wasn't.

Harry,
You didn't say what model the Uberty was. If a '66 or '73 then the problem is overall length. For these the cartridge MUST be no more than a few thousandths shorter than the carrier or the gun will be locked up by the next cartridge coming back too far into the carrier.

I figured this out on the model 73 in about 5 minutes looking at how the block picked up the case.
I had no problem with the using the 357 case other than I have about four thousand 38 Spl case's and no funds really to buy about a thousand 357 case's.
Then having the two on a loading bench , some how a 38 is going to gowere a 357 should only go.
The uberti 73 seemed like a good little unit. ;)

There is an easy solution. Get a 38 sp. or 9 mm taper crimp die. Shallow seat the bullets to 357 mag length and taper crimp them. It works great.
It will be a bit difficult to get the carbon ring out of the chamber after shooting a lot of 38 cases.
I used this technique to long load the 357 to almost 1.8" for my 94 Trapper. It fed fine and the taper crimp was plenty to hold the bullet under recoil.
