I know I keep asking for people's oppinions on guns. You guys are such a great source of knowledge for me! Perhaps I will be able to offer knowlageable oppinions of my own in the future.

There are three bolt action .22s that I am interested in learning more about. They are for sale at a gun shop here in Nova Scotia. ( The gun shops here are few and far between.)

1. A Lakefield - I'm told it's made by Mossbereg.
2. a Norinco - Chinese made
3. A used CIL model 125 - I'm told it was made by Anschutz (sp?) for CIL. Was probably made in '70s or late'60s

If anyone can give me any info about these makes/models I would appreciate it very much.

One other thing:
I was looking at getting a .22 magnum because I thought I could use it for both rabbits and coyotes. The more I think about it and read about it the .22 WMR would probably be too much for rabbits (snow shoe not cotton tail) and not quite enough for coyotes. Any oppinions?

Thanks
God Bless,
Rob

The older Lakefields where made in Canada, and are good shooting rifles, but questionable triggers. The Norinco have quality problems, from what I have heard. Some are good some are not. The CIL, if in good shape should be a good rifle, age does not matter. I have an old North American Arms Gizzley, that was made in the 50's, and it shoots very good. The .22 mag is on the lite side for coyotes, a .222 or .223 would be better, or mabe a .22 Hornet. I hope this helped a little.

Hawk,
Thanks for your reply. It is helpful. I will have to take a good look at that CIL. I did a little digging on my own and found out that Lakefield Arms LTD. of Ontario was bought out by Savage Arms in 1994. Savage now make all of its .22 rimfires there.

Thanks again,
Rob

IIRC, the CIL 125 was an Anschutz on the economy action. The bolt handle is in line with the front of the trigger guard, while the better action has the handle in line with the trigger. Both 5 and 10 shot mags were available. Barrel quality was iffy, so I'd shoot it for group before I'd buy. I think both Anschutz actions had bolts heads that don't turn with the handle. You can disassemble the bolt by turning the head a quarter turn until it slips off. The Anschutz triggers are much better that the Lakefields I've seen.

Thanks Jack,
I doubt if the guy will let me shoot the rifle before buying it. At this point, it may be better for me to wait and buy a Savage or Marlin. I could buy a new Savage for the same price that he is asking for the Lakefield. Do you know if the triggers are any better on he newer models? What about the Marlin trigger? - The bolt actions not the semi-autos.

Thanks,
Rob

I don't know about Marlin's lastest production. Savage is paying attention to their centre-fire triggers, so maybe they're working on their rimfires too. There's got to be somebody here who has checked out the new ones.
