I really like this rifle & would like some of the forum members who own one of these - opinion as to its reliability & above all ACCURACY? Does anyone have one in 17Hmr? Are these accurate rifles or should I save my money?

A friends uncle has one and we snuck it out of the house a month or so ago. Very nice rifle but nothing like the Browning 78's and BPCR Highwall stuff. Wood is nice, fit is good, but sub-par with the older Brownings. Accurate? Yes, and then some! We shot it in the WIND and were still hitting pop-cans at 50 yards consistently. The price would put me off a bit, but you only go around once. For me a 22 is more of a beater and utility gun and I'm more of a Stevens Savage 22 Favorite kind of guy. But I doubt you'd be disappointed in the Low-Wall - it has nostalgia all it's own...

Well I bought one!
:D Any suggestions as to bases ,scopes & what about tang sights? Does anyone make one for this gun that does not require drilling * tapping?

I had a 270 B-78 quite a few years back that had a smooth barrel (no sights). Drilled and tapped for a scope, but with a Leopold fixed 6 power on it, it was TIGHT under the scope to get to the hammer. Was worse trying to lower the hammer as it would pinch your thumb on the way down. That's why I would veer off a scope if I could, taller bases would work but that lifted my head too far off the stock. Tang sight would be my first choice, and I saw one recently that had an enlongated rear hole to accomodate Sharps and 1885's, if I remember right. If I can find reference to that I will post back. I think a long range sight would be kind of fun on a 22...

I have the high grade Winchester 1885 low Wall in 22lr. The rifle typically shoots quire well. On a typical day I can consistently get three shot group in under an inch ay 50 yards and on a good day, I can get three shots groups that are touching. I have only had the opportunity to shoot at 100 yards twice. The first time I spent most of the time trying to get on the paper. Once the sights were adjusted I was shooting within a 5 inch group. The second time my binoculars broke and it was raining, so I was just throwing lead for fun.
I did not put on a scope, but, I did upgradethe sights. Fromt sight is a lyman globe with a variety of inserts and the rear is a tang mounted soule vernier sight. The rear sight is ovekill for the rifle, but, it looks good.
If you have already purchased one, how does it shoot? Did you scope it? if so, what mounts & rings?
Thanks

I just bought the Winchester 1885 in the 17hm2. I put a Lyman Peep tang sight on it somehow it just did not seem right to put a scope on it.The rifle is new and I haven't shot it yet.I put a plastic 22 snap cap cut off to test the trigger. I would like to have a globe front sight but it won't happen anytime soon. It is a beautiful gun. It would be great to put a set trigger on it.
The case hardening is very pretty.

Here's a Marble's Tang Sight for the low-wall 1885 (from Midway): http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=180159
Another great rear sight option is the Williams FP-1885 receiver sight: http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=637595
I would install a Lyman 17 or Lyman 20 globe front sight as well: http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=517374

If you want to mount a scope, here's what you need for a base: http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=759022
Use medium height rings.
I don't have a low-wall, but I have 3 high walls - one is scoped (.270WSM Hunter), one has the Williams receiver sight/Lyman 20 front sight (.454), and one has a Marble tang sight/ Lyman 20 front sight (.45-90). All are excellent. As for the front sight, I tried the Lyman 17, but it was too small for the relatively long barrels of my rifles (28 and 34 inches). It might work well on the shorter low-wall barrel, and it would look a little nicer. I have a Leupold 2-7x33 compact scope on the Winchester Hunter, and have no problems accessing the hammer. I would recommend a compact scope of this sort if you end up scoping it (the light weight and small size improve handling as well).
