Guns and Ammo, Guns, Handgunner, ect ect ect.....

Some of them sure have some nice photography of their featured products....

I don't know that i always agree with their analysis of every gun, but its still nice seeing other stuff. Even the advertisements look nice....
Springfield Armory and S&W have some really nice chrome plated adds......

Drool....

When I was twelve and hung on every word I read in them It was like my own little heaven. Now that I'm in my thirties the same ol stories hashed and rehashed over and again have sort of lost thier luster, true the gun models have changed (some) and were getting repackaged cartridges that duplicate something that came and went 20-30 years ago but the "plots" of most of the articles are the same, Best Whitetail this... Best Best elk that.... Yawwwnn....

Me too. I got a bunch of gun magazines. I can't make myself throw any of them away.

Seems to me like they are the same old stuff over and over.

I do read Fur-Fish_Game cover to cover and American Rifleman cover to cover as well.

i'm gettin' kinda selective about the ones i buy, as lots of 'em have nothing for me anymore. American Handgunner has awesome pics, American Rifleman is good and comes with NRA membership, and Rifle mag because Ross Seyfried writes there and he is my favorite gun scribe. after that, i gotta glance thru and make sure there is subject matter i'm interested in before i buy.

I confess...I buy anything out there with an article that interests me. I can barely bring myself to throw them away.

My Favorites are Handloader/Rifle, Rifle shooter, and Fur-fish-Game. I really like FFG because they concentrate on stuff an average joe like me can do here in the states...No hunting in Africa or Fishing the Amazon type BS.

My favorite scribes are John Barsness, Bryan Pearce, Clair Rees. They write like normal humans. I can't stand Jim Carmichael...he and his custom every gun and shameless ******* to the manufacturers leave me cold. I can take or leave Craig Boddington and Larry Weishuhn. I enjoy Ross Setfried & Rick Jamison.

Colonel Jeff Cooper leaves me cold. The man is obviously intelligent, yet writes like a pompous ***. His third person vernacular is tiring but every now and again he hits close enough to the mark to make for some interesting reading.

I have my mags from life memberships that come with the membership. I take Handloader/Rifle. I'm looking at Precision shooting or their hunting gun mag. I quit ST, G&A, and a host of others. So much lame stuff written about these days. Try this. Look at the technical and other articles on BTB. Those have the chaff removed. Just real world stuff and no advertisements. Another Emagazine is Chuck Hawks homepage. You now have to subscribe to that page to get everything. I'm glad I saved some of his articles and data before he officially went commercial. Wondered why it took so long. Good luck...Bandito ;)

One magazine that I don't see mentioned, that I enjoy, perhaps because it is somewhat "unprofessional", and all the articles are reader-submitted, with no syndicated-writers, is Backwoodsman it's hard to find on the newstands, but I enjoy them very much, with much practical information for the do-it-yourself oriented outdoor enthusiast, with a focus on limited-budget-minded projects.

http://www.backwoodsmanmag.com/

FF&G has been on my periodical list since I was in high-school. It's not the publication it was when Mr. Harding was still alive, but it's still a good read.

Fun stuff! I enjoy threads like this.

God Bless,

There was a time like that...but I got better. Will find the most are less illuminating than they are promotional (at least you will find that if you haven't already). Are few "rags" that promote real reseaech or useable data...are a few articles now and again, but most are of the "golly, ain't his just the greatest thing ever" type.

Will find a cycle...some old articles are burshed off and re-sold to various magazines, others of the "XX vs YY" type are recycled now and again...guess people like the illusion of a discussion.

Handloader and rifle are decent...a lot of us old timers don't think they are up to the level before they "sold out"; got a lot more pretty pictures now....got more style than substance, but at least there is still some substance.

Don't think I've bought a gun rag in a year or two...do tend to the Guns Digest each year, Handloade's diegest (but not yearly), and the occasional re-print of older books.

Agreed. That's why I can peruse most of what's interest to me in an hour or so standing at the newsrack. The ones I occasionally will succomb to and purchase are:

American Handgunner
Guns
Combat Handguns

I probably only buy 3-5 over the year. The internet has taken the place of most of my gun reading.

When I was 14-16 years old, I hung on every word that O'Conner wrote in Outdoor Life. I am very glad that 40 years later I still have many of those magazines
I guess that is why I am so partial to .270 Win, 30-06, 7X57, 220 Swift, 300 H&H etc.
O Conner liked them so they must be good.

People like O Conner, Elmer Keith, and the like just seemed like they couldn't be "bought" by a new fad caliber that came along so often. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't remember it that way.
Now, I seldom buy a magazine. I can pretty well tell you what they say on the inside. More hype then anything.
I'm glad we have the internet and this forum.
I've learned a lot here.
But still no better hunting rounds then the ones mentioned above--

Have to admitt, I'm addicted and have been for years. I work overseas a lot and can not ususally find English magazines of any kind, so when I have my mail forwarded, I make sure to ask for a couple copies of the latest mags.
It's also fun to see the locals express some interest in the magazines.
Since I haven't put a high speed broad band connection in the "little library" yet, the internet has yet to replace the printed version.
The stories do get very, very old, but really, how much can you do with the limitations of the subject?? I do avoid any 9mm to 45ACP comparisions and only read through them when I've exhausted all other possiblities. (like back of a shampoo bottle).

Back in the dark ages when PC/lawyers didn't rule the world, found the bound yearly collections of the American Rifleman in the back stacks of the college lib. Evidently some benifactor was an NRA member, and his collections made it (perhaps by stipulation with his donation) to the stacks. Lived on campus, and when time permitted, when through most of the bound sets.

(OF course, even then, if I had money would spend it on beer, pizza, and the persuit of happiness...but usually was broke.)

Unlike today where you are lucky to get one "meat" article per issue, they were more common then...some true experimentation, in depth historical articles, and some great do-it-yourself articles.

But do remeber the end of finals week...with no tests left to study and waiting a few days to catch a ride back home (or taking the TRAIN if I had the $), sucking up the free coffee provided for the "crammers" still looking forward to tests, eating the donated donuts provided at mid-night, and absorbing those bound collections as hard as I did for Anatomy or Physics.

I first subscribed to G&A when I was about nine, and gave it up twenty plus years later, when I realized I'd already read every article in my teens. The new gun reviews are a joke, and always have been. I tried ST, Handgun Quarterly, all of them, different writers, same articles, very few differences. These days I subscribe to American Handgunner, and buy GUNS off the newsstand about twice a year. Apparently I think I know it all, or maybe it's just that they can't teach me much anymore. In any event, AH still has the centerfolds, sometimes they even have pix of Revolvers for us fossils who still like them. I own, shoot and like autos, but one more article on some custom 1911 for four grand is gonna get passed right over!

If you are a deer hunter, one of the best magazines availble is The Journal of the Texas Trophy Hunters.
www.ttha.com
Lots of useful information for the hunter. Not much on guns though.
I've always wanted to know by caliber, what the break down of calibers used on deer was in this old state. Might be interesting.
I'm thinking .243, 7mm mag, 270 win, 30-06.
Anyway, check it out-

These Mag.'s ain't $.35 cents anymore ! $4.00 to $7.00/mag is as much as i can buy a book for today ! So i buy them on the news stands only now , because if they don't have any informatiom written in them that i like i don't spend the money on them ! I have bought used books on shooting and reloading etc. for as much or less ! JAGG

In Australia we dont seem to have the selection that you guys have. The pick of the Australian bunch would have to be Guns and Game. It is 100% color and has some great articles on Game behaviour as well as hunting stories (which are real stories not just made up with some pictures pulled from elsewhere). Best of all it is run by real country people who have been pro roo shooters and the like and have plenty of practical knowledge. We also have sporting shooter which has been around for many years but I find the older ones (back to the late 70s) are the best. We have guns aus which is solely about the firearms and no hunting. We also have the Australian Shooter(used to be the shooters journal) which is the free mag with membership to the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia(SSAA). Again I like the older editions best with interesting articles. There have been a few mags that have been and gone. So out of the four regualar mags I always buy Guns and Game (especially for its series on Sambar Deer) and sometimes Sporting shooter but generally not the others. I always buy mags second hand from book shops if I dont have them though. At 20-50c each I cant complain because now they all cost between $6-8Aus.

Man, I'd be glad to sell my ancient collection of gunny magazines from about 1970s to present.

These include Gun World, Guns & Ammo, Handguns, Guns, American Handgunner, Shooting Times.

Anyone wants to buy several hundred pounds of gun magazines from northern Wisconsin...there yours 50 cents apiece...thats a lot price.

All stored in cardboard boxes.

shipping expenses will be the problem. I've been a life member of NRA for 25+ years now, so I've been sent 300 copies of American Rifleman, and I've read many hundreds of other mags. I agree, I skim them on the newstand, pick thru used ones at gunstores now and then. I find about 1 per year worth buying.

I HAVE HARD TIME THROWING GUN MAGS AWAY. USED TO BUY EVERYONE AVAILABLE. I DON'T BUY TOO MANY ANYMORE UNLESS THERE IS SOMETHING THAT PERTAINS TO MY INTERESTS. I LIKED ST,GA, AMER HANDGUNNER, GUN GAMES, ETC. LIKE ROSS S./SKEETER/KEITH/LIBUORAL? DISLIKE COOPER AND MOST OTHER OVERLY ARROGANT MILITARY TYPES.
270 VS 280 VS 30-06 MAKES ME PUKE. i'VE SEEN THESE OVER AND OVER FOR THE PAST 25 YRS. WHICH ACTION IS BEST? BRING BACK THE MODEL____! I AGREE IT MUST BE HARD TO DREAM UP A NEW TOPIC EVERY MONTH, BUT THERE ARE NEW CALIBERS COMING OUT ALL THE TIME. INOVATIONS ARE SCARCE. TIME TO READ ABOUT THE NEW (OLD) 1911. AGAIN.
I'M DONE SHOOTING OFF MY MOUTH ... FOR THE TIME BEING.

I've never had any trouble coming up with scores of new topics each month, so I see no reason why they have trouble coming up with 1.

I didn't see any ot the magizines mentioned that Wolff Publishing do (Rifle, Handloader, and Sucessful Hunter). IMHO they are the best avaliable now, they haven't soldout the highest tech, fastest velosity, hunt on your butt instead of your feet mentality. They still do articles on hunting with traditional black powder rifles (without scopes mind you), Africa hunts with 1886 leverguns iron sighted, about people actually stalking their prey in the wilderness and taking it. They even have articles about hunting with a long bow.
Give them a try they are a fresh new look at an old sport without spoiling it with technology.

Bouhunter - If you check back on the first page of this thread you'll see reference to Rifle and Handloader magazines.

I agree, the only firearms related magazines subscribed to these days is Rifle, Handloader and Successful Hunter. The American Rifleman and the North American Hunter come with life memberships.

I agree 100%.. I used to read the others .. SA, F&S,OL..My brother calls them "GQ-for-guns". It seems like they all got away from the real outdoorsy stuff and turned into glorified ads for the "latest and greatest". The writers gush about the latest this or that. I can't recall reading a negative article on anything. Then again if a vendor pays for a writer to try their product and it gets panned, chances are that writer won't be getting any freebies from that vendor anytime soon...so much for objectivity.

I subscribe to FFG because of the down to earth writing and subject material. A few months back FFG had a great article about an old-timer in Alabama who taught kids to hunt squirrels with a home-made flipper (us yankees would call it a slingshot) and a box of ball bearings. What a great article! To me, that really captured the magic of what hunting was all about. No fancy gadgets, no big bucks excursions, just showing that fun is where you find it.

Since taking up muzzleloading in the last year, I have started reading "Backwoodsman" after discovering it at a local bookstore. I had to subscribe after the bookstore stopped carrying it. There are some great articles in BW too. No pretention, just honest opinions, ideas and experiences offered for the reader's enjoyment.

For my money, I want to gain something, be it a new technique, a little more knowledge, or a humorous diversion if I am going to invest my valuable time reading what an author (or publisher) feels is important. I won't waste my time or money on any publication whose sole purpose seems to be convincing me that I really need to spend more money to be the "outdoorsperson" that some marketing geeks want me to be.
