I am interested in setting up my 336 as a scout/general purpose rifle and I'm curious about something. Do any of you have one of the Leupold, or Burris Scout Scopes mounted on your 336? I'm curious as to whether the scope mounts specified by the two companies for their scout scopes for the Marlin 336 are forward/barrel mounted or receiver mounted. It doesn't specify in either web site.

Oldebones,
I am not sure this will help but I am currently using XS Sights Scout scope mount for my Mauser and I know for sure that the mounts offered by XS for Marlin 336 are forward mounted. I just looked at one today.
Best regards,
Valter

I use that setup from XS on my 1895ss with Leupold QDW rings and a 3plex Burris Scout Scope. Works fine. I have gone over to the Savage 99 now. I don't use the 95 as much. The 99 in .358 WCF has done anyting I asked of it. Good luck. Bandito

Thanks for sharin' folks. For some reason, most likely purely asthetic perhaps, I can not bring myself to purchase the AO mount. I'm not by any means saying anything bad about it. I know for a fact it's a good mount. It's just not for me. I'm sort of drawn to the mount made by WWG's, and the way Mrockman's sets up their mounts looks extremely sturdy, but I don't want any more cuts in the barrel than absolutely neccessary (the Brockman requires two) . I was just curious about the mounts specified by the companies for their particular scopes, for the 336. I've contacted the companies, and if anyone is interested I'll post their replies here.

If you're using a "scout" scope, it is intended for a more foreward mounting to achieve proper eye relief. If you want to mount on the reciever, you don't need a "scout" scope. I plan to put a foreward mount scope on my browning 1886 carbine and will use custom steel bases screwed and sweated to the barrel, and milled as low as possible so as to be as unobtrusive as possible when the scope is off (95%of the time)the gun.

Hey malamute. The forward mounting is precisely what I am trying to find out about in regards to the factory suggested mounts for this rifle/scout scope combination. I am not satisfied with some of the 'scout' mounts out there, and I'm trying to find out if the factory suggested mounts are for forward mounting or not. The most stable I've seen is from Brockman's, but requires two new cuts in the barrel. I could take a picatinny rail and fabricate my own, or have one made to my specs, but if the factory rails allow for the forward mounting I might take a look at them. I like options.

I'm planning on using "gunsmith" (meaning not milled or contoured on the bottom) bases from brownells. I don't care for the mounts that have a long "rail" or a lot of slots and widgets I don't need. I'm going to have a custom quality setup that will be fit to my gun, only 1 base for each ring. Probably use a ruger type ring/base for scope zero repeatability when the scope is off(most of the time) and then replaced. This will be a gunsmith only type setup, probably one of a kind. If you want something special or above the ordinary, it will cost something extra. It isn't really that difficult to do for a gunsmith, to mount the bases on the barrel, milling them for a low clean fit and sweating and screwing them on.
