Hello folks. I got an old p-14 enfield reciever as a gift. It has the boltface for the 303 british (rimmed). Looking around, I found the 8x57 rimmed mauser would work with no alterations at all.A friend has a standard reamer which would work fine, however,I thought I would ask around if any-body knows about a reamer for an 8x57 improved.Seeing that this rifle will be built from scratch,(traisten trigger, douglass barrel, boyd stock) I might as well squeeze the max potential from this configuration.Cant find a listing for the 8x57 improved but I cant imagine it hasnt been done. Any info?

Your P 14 has a bore diameter of ,311, and the 8MM has a bore diameter of .323. You would be better off with a 303 improved. either way you will need to modify the feed rails in order to get reliable feeding. If you want an 8MM you will need to rebarrel your action, or have the existing barrel bored and rerifled.

For all practical purposes the 8mm JDJ is a rimmed 8x57,the rim dimensions being slightly different .It is formed from the .444 Marlin.
The 8mmJDJ was designed for Contenders with 14-15 inch barrels .

John,
When I searched for reamer specs for the 8mm Improved I, like you, could find no available info. I contacted Dave Kiff at PTG and after a discussion I sent him a dummy round with the bullet of choice located to the depth I desired in the case and he made an Ackley Improved reamer for me. It is listed with him as the 8x57 MAI (Mauser Ackley Improved).
I hope this is of some help.

Thanks ol'John. Did you chamber a rifle in it yet? If so what were the gains,if any. I'm guessing 200fps across the board. John.

John,
Yes, I set the barrel back and rechambered a Yugo Model 24 and cut the barrel back 2" because of a bad muzzle! I have only fireformed a few cartridges so far and have done no load workups as of now. I am expecting, as you noted, about 200fps improvement. The rifle itself is to be my bad weather/go to rifle. Installing a Williams peep sight and a Marlin hooded front sight with the "glow" sight-thingy. Going to make a few changes on the original military stock such as recoil pad, slim down the exterior, add an ebony fore-end tip, classic panels on the stock like the Mauser customs of the 20's & 30's, sand the stock and put 2 coats of Tung oil and then 3 or more coats of marine spar varnish to all wood surfaces. This should work to reasonably water-proof the stock ---- but then again -- it may not! Time will tell.
