Ahoy mateys! I just received my first rifle a couple days ago. I know I told ya that I wasn't going to get it until my birthday, but my parents are going out of town the next day, so they are letting me have it now. It looks and feels really nice (Marlin model 983 .22mag rimfire). I noticed one thing on the gun that I'm not sure if it's normal though. The swivel studs aren't straight (the holes do not point left to right, but more of a diagonal). I'm afraid that if I try to turn it that it will break off, since it looks like its glued to the wood. Is this common to have swivel studs like that?

congrats on your new gun. Those swivel studs will turn. They either screw in or go all the way thru and have a nut on the backside.
When a sling is installed and the gun is carried with the sling they will move back and forth as needed.
I should add that every one I have ever seen has turned, so be careful just in case.

My first rifle was a J. C. Higgins 22 LR in a semi-auto. I was never allowed to use the feeding tube on the gun. I had to load it single shot, but I didn't mind because to me it was indeed a beautiful gun and very accurate. :)

This one is a bolt action with tubular magazine. I am allowed to use the magazine or single shot...which ever I feel like doin. The wood work on this gun is beautiful too.

My first gun was a Dakota 76 in .25-06. I got it when I graduated from high school. It was stolen exactly two months later. Keep a very good eye on your gun, to some pothead its just another dime.

I'm keeping a good eye on my gun. Right now it is my shadow (except for when I go to school of coarse...that'd be bad).

The wood work is so beautiful! That was the first thing I noticed about it that "wowed" me.

Congrats on your new rifle. I bought myself a used Model 783 just before I went to basic (20 some years ago). The fixed sling swivels (non qiuck detachable) do rotate also on this model. Its one of my most accurate rifles I've ever owned (over 150!)
