I took out my new Savage Model 93 17hmr today and noticed a problem that I am not sure if it is universal? For some reason the extractors wont always pull the fired Remington brass out. After comparing this brass to the Hornady brass the rim seems more rounded. I think this is causing the extractors to slip off the rim. Dragging my fingernail over the rim like an extractor the Hornady seems to have more of a pronounced rim. Anyone else had this problem? Its a new gun so Im not sure if its the gun or the ammo.

Thanks guys,

Bill

BroncoBill,

I've shot all the brands in my Savage and have never experienced the problem you had. It could either be a bad batch of cases (unlikely) or something wrong with the extractor (more likely). I'd suggest you contact Savage and see if they have any suggestions. You may have to send the rifle back to them for a replacement extractor. But before you do that, by all means try some Remingtons from a different lot number.

If you'd like to see my write-up on the Savage, go to: www.rimfirenews.com and search through the "Archived Articles" section.

You said its a new rifle, have you cleaned the bore yet? If there is any crud in the chamber its gonna give you problems.
The bulge in the case is normal with all 17HMR ammo and with every rifle I've heard about. Usually about 10-20% of the casings have it to some degree.
I agree with gunwriter, it soulds like the extractor but I'd give everything a good cleaning and try again before I sent it back for repair.

just my 2¢

There is a spring that puts tension on the extractors that hold the shell in place, I think it squeezes them together, you may be able to bend it and get more tension. I havent done this yet so im not speaking from experience, I did read something regarding this procedure on rimfirecentral.com though, you might want to check that site also.

Hi Bill,
My Son has the same gun in the SS with the heavy barrel. It is a great shooting gun but 1 out of about 100 rounds he runs into the same problem. From what I have been able to tell, it appears it is more of a ammo problem than the extractor. I contacted Savage about this and was told that it is more than likely a less than perfect bullet case. I would tend to agree because when I go to dig the bullet out of the chamber for my son it seams to be stuck in place a bit.

By the way.... You can make this gun shoot like a million dollars with about an $80 upgrade. You may want to consider a new trigger from Rifle Basics. I put this on my Son's Savage and it helped him shoot sub 1 inch groups from a bench. It may not be a good looking as my Ruger 17HMR but it will outshoot it any day of the week. Darn good gun for the $$$ and I wouldn't worry to much about the sticking rounds unless it starts to happen more often using different lots of ammo. By the way we have found the best ammo to be the Horandy. My Son has made several head shots on squirrels at approx. 100 yards with the Savage topped with a Burris 3-9X50 scope. Good luck and have fun with the great little varmint gun.

I'd be real careful about getting in there and bending parts on a new rifle! It could void the warranty and, if you really aren't sure what you're doing, cause other problems. Sometimes "shade tree" gunsmithing can turn into an expensive disaster. I know, I've done it to myself a couple of times!!

Thanks guys for your input. The gun is new from the box. It seems to do it more often with Remington ammo, so I think I'll stick with Hornady. I am also going to contact Savage to see if theres anything they can do. Especially if it can be done for free.

Thanks again guys

Bill C,

The work may be covered under warranty. If you bought it from a dealer, his smith may be able to check it out for you without having to send it back, and without any charge!

broncobill86,
There should be no problem feeding/extracting any manufacturer's ammo. Most of the time, we use Hornady here on our ranges for both function fire tests and also targeting. Please let me know if this problem continues and we will make the arrangements for it to come back for us to take a look.

Although I try and frequent forums as much as possible, sometimes it seems as if there is just never enough time in a day! Please stay in touch and let me know how you make out.

Sincerely,
Joe DeGrande

Joe,

Thanks for your concern. I am going to take it out this weekend to see if it is still a problem. It kinda had me discouraged so I haven't had it out much since. I made sure to scrub the chamber to make sure there was not any factory grease or something causeing poor extraction. I'll let you know. If there is still a problem can I reach you if I call the Savage service department?

What can I say guys. You can't beat this for great customer service. I would say Savage should be proud to have a man like Joe on their team. This is why I buy Savage with confidence. My Son's first 17 HMR was a Savage and it is a nice little rifle. After sighting in this great little rifle, this poor groundhog found his way into Brandon's cross hairs. About a 90 yard shot and the Savage with a Simmons rimfire Mag was right on the mark.

[I have a Savage 93 std wt it's a great little gun very simple to tune the trigger, the biggest culprit is the heavy trigger spring. I took the extra magazine and depressed the plunger a little and drilled and pinned it in place, it works great for single shot use compared to the other factory mag. Savage should offer such an accessory it makes all the differance in feeding single rounds. can't wait for the .17 mach 2, the hmr. is really a hoot. Clyde

Yep, have the same problem extracting Remmington ammo. Great shooting little gun for the money though.

Hi guys, I can't find Joe's site. what Savage needs is a special magazine for the 93 for easy single shot loading, what a great little gun, can't wait for the .17 mach 2
