View Full Version : .223-378 Wtby ?
Would A 223 Caliber Based On The 378 Weatherby Case Be A Viable Cartridge. A Friend Of Mine Wants On In A Ruger No1. I Think He Is In For A Big Headache. It Seems To Me Alot Of The Powder Would Be Blown Out The Barrel. Also Seveare Barrel Ware And Tare. What Do You Think?

It was done 30-40 years ago. Barrel life was under 100 rounds.
A recent experiment with the infamous .22-378 Ergensplittin Loudenboomer got 5079 fps with a 40 grain Ballistic Tip and a 118 grains of VV 170. (Precision Shooting, Feb. 1999)

Jack - Do you mean the golden rule of 4500 fps absolute maximum has been violated?
Sounds like an expensive flame thrower to me.

You have to look at some of the rounds used in WW1 that were necked down to shoot through Tanks in those days ! They had some real wild cats then ! I read and saw some of these rounds in some book ! Get a long barrel for your 22/378 wm ! That way you can get 500rds out of it !JAGG

Ran into a current one..Steyr IWS 200. Really more a 90 pound two man rifle, but a 308gr. Tungsten finned dart at 4757fps seems impressive.
Bigger (out of the single man possible) would be the AMR 5075 reported to move a 1.25oz. Tungsten fin stabilized dart at 4920fps.
Looking at these cases, makes it pretty clear than the fight for velocity passt 4500 is pretty fierce using chemical drives.
**** the chemical drives Scotty, I need warp 11 now!!
