I have fallen in love with a rossi 92 rifle in 45 colt with the full octagon barrel and case colored receiver. they want 450 for it and I am going to pay their price. now, what I REALLY want is to take this rifle, cut the barrel back to 16.25, put a Lyman 66 on it and have a some nice walnut stocks made up for it. I have never had anyone work over a levergun before and I am not familiar with the gunsmiths who do that type of work. Anyone have any suggestions? Regards. lawboy.

I toyed with that idea on my M92.I wanted a 16.5 but they were more than I wanted to spend.I bought a blue 20" for almost $200 less than the carbine.I do need a sight aswell.I'm thinking of the reciever peep too.How is that lyman 66,it seems like it should mount easy enough.

Lawboy,
try this link I believe you'll find an ample list of 'smiths that specialize in levers

http://www.leverguns.com/leverguns/leversmiths.htm

I had my Rossi 454 cut back to 16.5 and I love it
You might think about using one of the lyman globe front sights also, I have one ordered for mine along with a reciever sight.
Who did it and for how much, may I ask.I have been looking into sights too.I'm having a little trouble there.Any sugestions.I looked a Brownells and Midway, didn't see any that turned me on.

I looked at the 20 carbine also, but I didn't like them nearly as much. No heavy octogonal barrel, no forend cap, no case colored receiver ... just not the same gun to me. I will look at the smiths on Paco's site, but I was hoping for a personal reference to a smith.
I have a Lyman 66 on a Winchester .357 trapper. It is a great sight. I use it without any of the aperature discs in place, kind of like a ghost ring. I will be getting one for this 92 project, but hope to find an all steel one some place. The front sight will probably end up being a tall blade made for a handgun. I like a nice, wide, black blade that gives a nice rectangular profile.

I only have experiance with
www.cosbycustomguns.com
I've known Brian Cosby for over 15 years, He does outstanding work at a reasonable price.

He did the action work on my Rossi and major custom work on several long guns and single actions, but due to time restraints I had the barrell work done by the
Match Armorers Shop in southern Indiana, Geoffrey is a NRA High Power High Master and specializes in match bolt guns and AR/M1A type match rifles. His prices are also reasonable.

Here's a pic of my Rossi, the Fire sight and Marble bbl sight are ok but will be replaced with Lyman sights

Also you may want to look at Williams online catalog page 10 and 14 for their different apertures. one of which looks like a blade sight with a square notch

Nice rifle, Jack. Is that factory wood? From the recoil pad I guess it is a .454 Casull. I cannot wait to get started on building mine.

Very nice Jack. The recoil pad looks different than mine. Thanks for the heads up on the sights. The set up on mine now is not long for this guy.I couldn't get it near the score rings at all.Mine shoots high right at 50 yards the groups look good.I tinkered a little but I would rather replace them. The one thing I have read that is very true. This thing kicks like a mule.I started the day with my 444 Marlin to try my reloads.240gr.Speer over 53gr H335.They shot very good, nice line dead center, and mild. This will be my plinking load. The 454s WFL pushing 300gr were noticably harder on the receiving(shoulder) end.The 444 loaded with the 300 gr will surely be harder but I was impressed with this guns power.
Now it I can get it to shoot like my Marlin I'll be a very happy camper.
