I was seeking a very light-weight hunting rifle for the type of hunting I do. I ended up buying the Remington Mountain LSS. I have loved this gun since I laid my eyes on it, and bought another in a 7mm-08. The shooting groups have been excellent in the .270, and performed well on the whitetails. I haven't taken the 7mm-08 out yet, but I expect it to shoot well. If you haven't shouldered one yet, I definitely recommend these guns. Does anyone have any comment on the performance of these guns? I bought the same gun for my son in .260 Rem. Of course he can't hunt with it for another year. Lets just say I use it to make sure it works for him when he is old enough. It is one of the best production rifles to carry I have ever found. Full up his is under 7.5 lbs. and shoots three shot groups as well as any factory rifle. Barrel is too thin and light to shoot many sussesive shots tho.
His gun shoots well enough to bust an occasional prairie dog but where it really shines is the long day hikes on the prairie chasing antelope and plains deer.

I got one in 7mm-08 and could not be more pleased. Before I shot it I pillar bedded the action and free floated the barrel. A trigger job and I was done. This rifle breaks all the rules when it comes to featherweight barrels. It will group all day long into 3/4 inch 5 shot groups at 200 yards (no, 200 is not a typo) and you can fire as quick as you can work the bolt and the group does not wander. Then the icing on the cake is that even though I shoot only X bullets in it, one patch and ten passes with CR-10 and I am done cleaning. I cannot say if all Mtn LSS are like mine, but I got a keeper.

Got one in .260 and love it to pieces. Long shot, close shot, no matter........Had one in 7-08 and wish i still had it. Of all the rifles i have, it gets used more than the rest because its so handy for the type of hunting we do (tree stands, mostly).

I have the Mountain LSS in .270 and 7mm-08..They also make it in 30/.06 and .260...I believe that is it...Great shooters and incredible weight...The looks of the LSS are fancy, whereas the regular mountain rifle is classic looking...

Don't have a Mtn LSS, but it looks like a winner.
Had one of the early Mtn Rifles (walnut/ blue/ hinged floor plate mag.) in 280 Rem. It was a shooter. I took deer, antelope, and elk with it using a Leupold M8 4X scope. Gave it to my son as his first big game rifle. Now he has used it for the same three species.
The recoil of full power 280 ammo in the Mtn Rifle is pretty sharp for anyone who doesn't shoot alot. I expect the 7-08 and 260 would be a dream to shoot.

Wow my last response on this thread was four years ago. Still have the LSS Mtn in .260 and still find it will shoot three shots very accurate but the barrel heats very fast and any more than three shots they start to spray. I removed the hump in the barrel shcannel nearest the muzzle because it was uneven and put too much pressure on the barrel upward. My .260 likes 140 gr. SSTs.

I noticed on Remington's website that they are offering the .257 Wby in the LSS this year.
I have had a Rem 700 Mtn rifle since the late 80's it is chambered in 280 Rem and is without any kind of bedding or work other than I adjusted the trigger consistantly gives me 3/4" 100 yard groups.
With IMR 4350 powder I am getting 3060fps with 139gr Hornady SST's...
I have shot two mountian goats and many deer, my son shot his first deer and 6" + black bear with this rifle/load combo, if I could find one in stainless steel black/gray laminate I would buy it in a heart beat.
After I found that it shoots as good as the gun I mentioned above I would sell the old one off...
edit to add...
Oh Man I just checked Remington's site and see that the LSS is chambered in 280 Rem to bad it is in the brown laminate now to see if I can find a black gray laminate stock somewhere.

I've got a Rem 700 CDL in n.35 Whelen that is nothing short of fantastic. It's the same set up as the MT rifle. Handles like the best rifle you could imagine....and shoots MOA all daylong
