Fellows,
How hot can you load a 33 Winchester for a modern steel 1886 Winchester?
Does someone make a 250 grain bullet for this ctg?
Was the 348 Mod 71 really needed when they already had this cartridge and the Mod. 86--esp. with modern steel 86's?
Who makes bullets for the 33? I believe Hornady---anyone else?

Hornaday no longer makes their flat point, they dropped it this year, HAWK, makes bullets for it in the 180 and 200 grain weight, don't know of any 250's out there unless you go to a mould, and cast, I never go above book listings for loads, and typically they run around the 1900-2100FPS mark.

Don,it has been one of the better lever guns I own, the onlt thing I'm looking at right now is weather to have it bored and chambered to 38-56 so bullets will not be an issue
Leadbutt, tell me it ain't true? Hornady dropped the 200FP?! What am I gonna do? That has been my "old reliable" for my .33WCFs for too long. I guess that it's a good thing that there are 500 of 'em under my bench. Whatever you do, don't rebore your gun to 38-56WCF. If you do anything, try 38-56 Imp. I've been shooting the original 38-56WCF in a Colt and Winchesters for many years, and it isn'tnearly the cartidge the .33WCF is. My rifles are older and don't have nickle steel barrels, so I can't load 'em too hot. Been looking for a nickle steel barrelled '86 in that caliber for a long time.

Last month I bought a box of Hornady 200 gr FN for the .33 Win from Midway. Don't know what is going on as I have heard the same thing. It is no longer shown in most catalogues now. I do shoot a 240 gr WLN bullet from Mt Baldy in my old rebarreled 86 circa 1906. Mt Baldy will even do a standard hard bullet or on request do a softer alloy with SPG lube. Please let us know what loads you end up with, how they were developed and their performance. I will post my results when I can get to a chronograph. By the way, I just ordered the 200 gr FPs because I found them. Only as a hedge on the day when I can't find them and decide to use jacketed. Good luck. Bandito
Don,
Oops. Almost forgot your original question. I only use the Hornady 200 FP(soon to be discontunued?!)when loading my .33WCFs. IMR4064 is a good choice for hotter loads. A starting load of 44 grs will give you around 2150 FPS. I gr increases up to a max of 47 will raise velocity and pressure accordingly. My guns have no problems with a top load of 47 grs. MV is 2450 FPs +. I'm going to chrono some different loads in my .33, .45-70, and .45-90 Winchesters as soon as weather and time allows.

Thanks for the heads-up!! I will get right down to my local shops tomorrow and buy every box on the shelves! :D
