I'm planning to buy a Thompson/Certer Arms 22 Classic Benchmark just for target practicing. This will be my first gun.
Any one can share comments on this gun or recommend a different alternative?
Thanks

Are a lot of 10/22 fans but it seeems nearly all of them buy a rifle with plans of modification in mind. Certainly don't have to modify them to get a reliable rifle, but it just seems a lot of 10/22 fans can't resist bolting on aftermarket goodies. Can get to a point with 10/22's that it's hard to find anything "Ruger" still on them....which kind of makes you wonder; if the Ruger is so great, why does so mjuch of it end up being replaced?
Have handled several T/C's and shot one a good bit. Solid guns, well constructed, steel construction....looks like they are built to last.
In semi-autos, it would be either the 10/22 or the T/C.

I've had a chance to handle this gun several times now, and I like it. HOWEVER, you did say this would be your FIRST GUN?
It's expensive, and that's compounded by the fact that you'll need a quality scope commensurate with the quality of the rifle. For that kind of investment, you really could get BOTH a cheaper .22 AND a .22 pistol.
As mentioned, Ruger's excellent 10-22 rifle, and one of their MkII or 22/45 pistols, for starters. Plus, those guns have sights, which as a new shooter you SHOULD learn how to use.:)

A remington 597 isn't a bad choice either they now make steel clips rather then the stock plastic one that coem with the gun other then the clips I have no complaints of this gun. and i'll agree with the the other two guy the 10/22 is a fine rifle to start with.

I've had one for a couple of weeks; about 300 rounds through it in 2 sessions. Bushnell Trophy scope; I think it's a 4-12 x 42. Good groups at 50yds w. Rem Target. Terrible with Winchester Target. I'm wondering if it would fit into some of the aftermarket 10/22 stocks without too much modification; afraid the different magazines would be a problem. Anyone have an iea?
