I found this loading date some time ago on the BTB site. I think it is from Marshall Stanton, but I am not sure.

"For The Marlin .45-70's here are a couple tried and true tack driving loads.

BTB .460"-405g LFNGC/56.0g H335/WLRP/Rem or Starline Brass

BTB .460"-405g LFNGC/52.0g H322/WLRP/Rem or Starline Brass

Both of the above loads are 1900-2000 fps loads depending upon the barrel length, but are proven to be exceptionally accurate in virtually every Marlin tested.

Another pair of tack drivers, stepping up a notch"

BTB .460"-425g WLNGC/50.0g H322/WLRP/Rem or Starline Brass

BTB .460"-425g WLNGC/53.0g H335/WLRP/Rem or Starline Brass

This pair of loads are outstanding in the accuracy department and are solid 1900 fps loads out of the Marlin 1895SS."

I notice that the apparenlty recommended size is .460 and not .459. Is that the case because most Marlins benefit from the .460 sizing? Also, I have some H4198 I have been wanting to try for these bullets. Anyone have good results comparable to the above?

Apparently Marlin is a little generous with bore size with some of the rifles
So I advise slugging the barrel and going with one thou. over the bore size. So is then the 460 bullet size saying anything to you? Try 4585 + or - 001.
There was some talk about bore size and the 44Mag in the hand loading section.

Pretty big groove diameters in the Marlins, apparently. My .35 Rem is 0.360" across the grooves.

Note, 0.001" - 0.002" oversized with cast bullets will rarely hurt anything; however undersized cast bullets can make life difficult.

That H322 load should be considered max. It will run about 1950fps out of the 18.5" barrel of a Guide Gun. If you are bothered by recoil you will find that anything but a tack driver.

I was educated by the wise old codgers from the old shooter's cast bullet forum to either (a) go with .460" diameter or (b) gaschecks when shooting cast through a marlin. You don't need both. What the old-duffers said is true - don't abuse yourself trying to keep from keyholing with .459" cast. Don't bother with bullet casters who won't size them .460" for you.
