I have yet to get to the range to test my 35 Rem loads with the Speer 180 FP, but my 12-year old son has been begging to shoot this rifle (Marlin 336C) the next time we go to the range. I have told him I'll load some plinkers for him, the factory 150 and 200 grain loads really rock him hard, he weighs about 70 pounds soaking wet. I plan on using the Rem. 158 SP's I buy in bulk, does anyone have a consistent, light, 1100-1200 fps load using Unique or something similar?
I'm also wondering what the difference in point of impact will be out to 50 yards, I doubt we'll plink past that range. Is there a big difference in POI with these two kinds of ammo?
Thanks guys, the wealth of experience and knowledge on these boards is a Godsend!

Haven't done any serious load development along these lines, BUT my lapping loads were 3 grains of bullseye with a 148gr. wadcutter (not the hollow-base variety). Anyway - recoil is so light ast to be ridiculous (sorry didn't chrono them) and none stuck in the bore.

If you are using the iron sights you can run the rear sight up a few notches to compensate. Or set up a scope in Weaver rings, take it off to plink, then put it back on to hunt (verify that it will hold zero but it's worked for me).

Hope this helps.....

RCBS cast bullet manual has data for pistol bullets in the .35 Remington, but they are a little hotter than 1100 fps.
158 RN 37gr./H380 = 1835fps
33gr./IMR3031 = 1857fps
19gr/SR4759 = 1727fps
These could be reduced , I have tried 12 gr/ SR4759/ 170gr Keith SWC in my '54 Texan but accuracy was poor.
I haven't tried lead bullets in the Trapper I built but found the 16" barrel shoots the Hornady 180gr.HP-XTP under 2" with reduced charges of Varget. Dave

I got 1400 fps with a 158 gr. Winchester hollow point and 10.0 gr. of Red Dot in my .35 Remington. This is a reduction of Ed Harris' 13 gr. load for the .308 and .30-06. Loads that were lighter had high velocity spreads. Point of impact shifts too much to get by without resighting. The Winchester hollowpoint ahead of 36.0 gr. of 3031 is very rough on skunks, as MikeG remembers. :D

Lyman #46 and #47 list 12.0 gr. Unique as max with cast bullets in the 200 grain range for about 1500 fps.

Fortunately I was far enough south (in Texas!) to not have to smell that one!!!! :D

I have been able to get "hard" cast 158 gr .3575 Moly coated bullets (for .357 mag). Spent a year before I read the Lee reloading manual on lead strength and estimating pressure/velocity for load changes. Combine this with researching Contender loads and you can come up with some decent (read accurate to 100 yd) loads. Don't go too light on cast bullets or gas cutting results in massive leading.

My fave load now is with the above bullet and 23 gr Reloder 7. It shoots with authority (no "pop"). No chrono, but estimate 14-1500 fps, no leading, and light recoil. At $18.00/500 rds it is cheap to shoot too. Without the stiff recoil of the factory loads, there will be a fair adjustment in your sight. With a Lyman Peep, this load will shoot 2"-2.25" at 100 yds (with microgroove!!).

Have fun.
