Has anyone used the 500 S&W Magnum to kill any game in Alaska yet?
Please post your story here, there are quite a few of us who would like to hear a firsthand account of the performance of this new big bore handgun (not some magazine article).

What loads were used?

What was the shooting distance?

How was the penetration?

What was the condition of the bullet(s), if any were even recovered?

What were the effects on the animal?

Please feel free to add any other info.

Haven't had a chance to use it for hunting yet. American Handgunner did a shorty article about a gent who popped a bear with his down in Southeast. You might want to contact him directly.

A fellow posted some pictures on this site of a pig he got, in Texas I believe, last fall. He said it made quite an exit wound but the pig lost his interest in walking.

I have spent some time killing a Spruce in my backyard. The meat tends to splinter and is extremely chewy so I don't recommend it for guests. Nonetheless:

I have had 275 grain Cor-Bons open to well over an inch in diameter

370 gr Cast Performance will pass almost entirely through the trunk with no deformation other than flattening the nose

400 Cor-Bons will go through the trunk (8 inches) with little deformation

I expect that I will have this Spruce ready to skin out in another twenty shots or so. It's been hard but have you tried pulling a chainsaw cord lately?

A couple of weeks ago I took a black bear with the .500 as he was a little too interested in my goat. Distance was roughly 35 yards and I was using my practice load of 38 gr. Lil Gun with a 370 gr Cast Performance bullet. At that distance there was no problem with shot placement and he dropped like a stone, quivvered and lay dead. I' ve been scouting for moose and think I might leave the rifle behind this year. I'll probably use a Buffalo Bore 440 gr hard cast for actual hunting.
