Here in Texas we use Mesquite, Pecan (related to hickory) and oak pretty heavily for cooking/ Barbequeing (smoking). What type of wood in Alaska is suitable for the same use?

Alder is what most folks use, it is especially good with fish. For other meat and fowl, I buy pecan or apple at the store.

Is the taste of alder similiar to maple?
What type of fruit trees grow there if any?
