I was looking over some 2003 1892's. I guess these are the "1 of 500" models that are made in Japan. I'm not an experienced collector, so I am wondering if this is a quality piece? Is it better or worse than the Rossi replicas? If I buy it (for $775), it will be in the .357 magnum cartridge.

I own two Rossi 1892's in 357 magnum, one is at least 9 years old an the other less than one year. Both of these rifles had ruff bores that required "intense" fire lapping.
I also own one Winchester reissued 1892 in 45 Colt.
The Winchester (made by miroku) was accurate and has had had zero leading with heavy loads right out of the box. Just looking at the actions one can see a difference in the manufacture. The Winchesters are of a higher quality.
Would I buy another Rossi? Yes. Would I rather be able to buy another Winchester\Miroku in the configuation I want?
Yes. The selection with Winchester is limited & the Rossi needs some t.l.c. to polish the bore. I would prefer a Winchester but I like & shoot my Rossi(s).

In my opinion, the quality of the reissues are top notch. I have one in .45 colt and have zero complaints. The Rossis I've seen are definately rougher, but still good guns.
I would not hesitate to buy another Winchester!

I recently purchased one in .357 and like it very well- mounted a Marble tang sight on it, and remove the apeture for cowboy shooting. Sorta gives the effect of a ghost ring, and is very fast.
The downside is my '92 doesn't like .38 Spl: the rounds flip up vertically and end up getting jammed in the action. (Although it probably shouldn't matter, as the .38Spl isn't a cowboy era caliber either).
Other than the limiting the rifle to .357, I like it well enough and would buy another.
I see USRAC has a Trail's End octagon barrel with case coloring for $100 or so less than the '92...if they ever bring that out in .30WCF or .38-55 I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Thanks for the great replies! I think I"ll buy the "Made in Japan" reissue Winchester .357. It certainly appears to be a beautiful work of art compared to its contemporaries.
