OK. I've had enough.
Went to the range Friday. Had a blast with the Guide Gun and some hot reloads. Got home, and my upper lip was swollen and all torn up like I was in a fight from where the stock was smacking me. Shoulder was sore and bruised as well.
Broke down and ordered a pair of sissy pads from Cabela's - one for the rifle and one for my shoulder.
Ain't gettin' older fun?

Sometimes a guy has to know when to say when! You won't regret the sissy pad.
A man has got to know his limitations.:)
Don't feel too bad, I'm "young" and have been using a PAST sissy pad for years. If I wanted abuse I'd go have dinner with the in-laws.

Or you could have the fight doctor come over and put vaseline on your face so the stock will slide off :D
Love the guide gun with stout loads!

It's too bad Marlin stocks are among the worse-designed ever, from a recoil perspective..... at least that's my opinion, anyway.
Might see if you can find some sort of lace-on pad for the stock; that sounds like it would help.
Even my lightweight (synthetic stocked) 336 in .35 Rem has a lot more bite than it should, because the darn stock just doesn't fit....

I had a grid to fit LimbSaver installed on my 444P and haven't looked back. Within two months of surgery for a severed rotator cuff I was shooting 40 rounds in a session.

Shhh.... Don't tell anyone....
Both sissy pads arrived from Cabela's Friday. The strap-on looks good. The Pachy fits the buttstock, but could be trimmed to fit. Doesn't matter. I'm keeping the original buttstock in case I sell this small cannon (unlikely), but I think I'll be quite happy with the pachy.
Hehe. Heading back out to the range Friday.
Why do most of us wait so long to become wise? :D
Went the Decelerator and wuss pad quite some time ago, plus dumping most of the hard kickers.
Have a lot more enjoyment at the range these days!

..... Shoulder was sore and bruised as well.....
I've never fired a factory round through my Guide Gun. I've reloaded from day one with 400'ish grain bullets at 1700fps and up.
My first outing bruised my shoulder pretty good. So I went home and cut the vent ribs out of the recoil pad with an exacto knife. My second outing still bruised my shoulder, and after nearly 100 rounds my shoulder was sore for two weeks. So then I made a homemade recoil pad. My third outing bruised my shoulder, but no more than shooting a zillion skeet loads with my shotgun. Then I added a beefy pad to my shooting vest. The bruising stopped. Then Midway had Winchester Magnum shoulder pads on sale for $10 and now I wear a "sissy" pad.
I've got about 1200rnds through the little gun and the first 500 were painfull. You don't want to be trying to work up a load from the bench without some serious recoil protection.
By the way, I used to come home with the knuckle on my nasty finger bleeding until did two things: (1) I radiused the trigger guard edge and (2) I learned to keep my fingers outside the loop when shooting from a bench.

After, my first goose hunt this past January with 3 1/2" shells out of a light 870 pump, I really think I hurt worst than then geese. Shooting straight up off of the ground, I ruined both shoulders, and cracked the index finger knuckle on my right hand. All done with three boxes of shells. But I couldn't let those snows go by.
After getting the right information from this forum. I got a new automatic with the mercury stabilizer & decelerator pad, I also wear a past pad.
I realized that there are many wuzzeys just like me.
My big rifle is a 308 and a 270. But I enjoy shooting much more, and the animals die just as fast.

Hello,
I do believe that leverguns are designed to kick more then boltguns.
I have shot thousands of rounds through my Krag, many of which are as hot as I dare. I have a new(to me) Savage '99,that requires a Past bra when I approach the hotter loads.
Same mathamatical recoil, but different felt recoil.
Note: my Krag is a cut down sporrter, and weighs about the same as the Savage.

Ah.... but you can't forget hearing the 'thwock'! of a .338 / 225gr. bullet hitting a pig.... even through your earmuffs!!!!!

to Mike G.
Haven't done any searching around yet, but do you know of any replacement stocks that ARE a better fit?? I know, it seems a shame that you have to start modifying a gun to be able to shoot it, after all its their business to supply what ought to be right at the very beggining, but, such is life I suppose.

The one replacement stock I've really been impressed with is the Bell & Carlson, but I don't think that they make stocks for lever guns - could be wrong. That seems to be a huge potential market that is being ignored....
I have some sort of replacement plastic stock on my 336 / .35 Rem, but it's no better than the factory and in fact may actually be worse. Gun came that way, by the way.... I am going to put a Decellerater on it one of these days, don't care who laughs....

This thread reminds me of my first time out with my rifle. I have never owned a gun before this year and what do I get for my first gun? A 45-70 single shot. Some people start out small, with maybe a .22 when they are groing up, guess I should a listened to'em. First time out I came home with some redness and lotsa hurt in my shoulder. next day it was colored all wierd. I thought, forget this I need a pad. Sure I am a wus but oh well. At least I didnt have a bruise after my next time out, just lotsa grins.

well I was thinking about a 375 H&H... lol just kidding. actually I would love to get another rifle which mucho cheaper ammo. But I still want to shoot a decent distance. I probably will end up getting a .22 something or other. Something that wont cost me much for either the rifle or the ammo. Sucks to be poor. I would love to reload my 45-70 to cut ammo cost but this is literaly my first gun ever so I want to wait a while to both get used to it and also I would have to save up for the equipment to do it with.

Snarf,
I wish you well, that you will prosper in the future. Reloading is a win-win effort. You cut costs significantly while producing ammunition that performs to your desires.
Funny that you should mention the 375 H&H.... I plan to acquire a Winchester Trapper to partner with my Blackhawk in 45 Colt. With my reloads, this will fill the bottom end of the 45-70 capability. My long range gun will be the 375 H&H, which can move a 235 grainer at 3000 ft/s out of the muzzle (probably need a wuss pad for that rifle as well...).

Anytime I get to feeling romantic towards one of the ladies I'm dating I'll load up a bunch (100) of 445 grain 45 Cal slugs for the Winchester 1886, with a double heaping handful of IMR 4064, to remind me of the bliss of marriage.
A hundred rounds of this load, with the cressant butt plate, does such a fine job of reminding of my marriages, that I resolve to rest the butt plate on my forehead should be become romantic again.

I guess we all need a reminder from time to time. Fortunately, I have a good wife this time. Took a few tries, though.

I have ask several friends to just shoot me and put me out of my misery. A box of 450's off the forehead would just give me a headache, which unlike marriage, could be fixed with a bottle or two of Motrin.
As for the "wus" pads, like wisdom, they come with age.
