I'm looking for a new turkey gun and laening twords the 870, but the Mossberg 835 ulti mag is still a possibility. What do you think?
Thanks,

I have a 835,can't beat it.I'm not sure of the 870 but the 835 has a conveinent safety. The trigger bits, but most shotguns have 10 pound triggers don't they;)

I would never own another 835, especially for turkey work. For me at least the stocks are not cut correctly and they hammer me with 3 1/2" shells.
The 870 fits like a dream, shoots great, extremely reliable, and good handling.
For the same money, take a look at the Benelli Nova too.
No on the 835 in my book though.

I would also go with the 870. I've never been able to hit anything with a Mossberg, although I've shot fine with everything else I've tried (Rems, Brownings, Berettas, NEF's). I bought an 870 Express 3 1/2" myself, and the only reason I didn't by the Nova was the slick plastic stock. Otherwise it was a great gun (shouldered nicely and the sights were the best factory sights I've seen on a shotgun).
For turkeys (one shot, one kill), the 870 is great, but if you plan on also using the gun for ducks or geese (multiple shots, multiple kills) I would look for something heavier to take the recoil.

Try one of the Mercury filled Recoil Reducers in the stock of your 870. That should soften the felt Recoil a lot. I have one in my Beretta S58E Skeet gun, and it sure helps when firing a large number of rounds during a days shoot.

Another vote for the 835. Tried my friends 870 but couldn't hit anything with it. The 835 swings better, shoots straighter and beats the 870 hands down. Give one a shot and form your own opinion.

I have NEVER seen a turkey I couldn't kill dead as a door nail using a 3 inch #4 or #5 shot shell!
The Remington is a better designed gun and better quality gun to boot! Shooting those 835 Mossbergs especially with a 3.5 inch shell will cost you a lot of money at the doctor's office down the road. They are simply real "Bone Crushers" on the thoracic and cervix part of your body. Not to mention your going to develop shoulder problems as well shooting them. They are noisy in the woods also.
We bought two of those Mossberg 835's when they first came out a few years ago. It didn't take long for me to realize that these two shotguns have real problems. I even called Mr Kelly at Mag Na Port and he stated that he gets at least 5 calls a week on the 835's from people wanting him to fix the heavy recoil problem and muzzle jump. He stated to me on the phone that he really could NOT fix them, they were a poor design.
I got rid of both shotguns that day and bought 2 Remington 870 Combo Expresses for turkey hunting guns. One for my son and one for yours truely.

I think you will like your 870s. My son and I both have the 870 Super Mag for turkey hunting and it has served me very well over the years. We had them both Pigeon Ported by Mag-Na-Port and that really helps in the muzzle jump department, but they still kick like the devil, no worse than a lot of the big bore rifles we shoot though.
While the 870s took their share of turkeys, I am afraid, mine at least, has been retired in favor of a Ruger all weather Red Label O/U (Second Skinned of course). All the turkeys I have killed required one shot, so I see no need now for a repeater. What I really like best about the O/U is the ability to throw a full choke in the lower barrel for shots 20 yards or less and the Briley .665 SR turkey tube in the top for those 30-40 yard shots. The number of pellets in the kill zone with the 3" Nitro Company's #4 nickel is the same as the 870's loaded with #5 Heavy Shot or Nitro Company's #4 Nickel, so I am giving up nothing in killing power, and not much in recoil either, man, those Nitro Company's loads KICK!
Enjoy your 870 and it will serve you well, but if ever in the market for another turkey gun, take a good long look at an O/U. If you talk to a few of your turkey hunting buddies you will find one or two (if they are honest) who have muffed a close in shot at a turkey because those super tight turkey tubes make missing very easy at close range. That is were the O/U really shines.
