David,

I read a post a while back that I think you posted about converting the 45/70 over a wide range of calibers, some where down around the .244 mark. If so would you mind posting some of your findings for your conversions? I am interested in the 25, 28, and 30 caliber conversions if you performed any. What kind of shoulders were used, powders, velocities, barrel lengths, basically overall in's and out's of the cartridges modified to. Thank you for reading.

This doesn't really answer your performance questions but, Virgin Valley Guns, makers of custom T/C barrels, has what they call the VVC line. They show 25, 28, 30, and 35 caliber rounds based on the 45-70 case. They may be able to give you some performance figures for these rounds. Sean

John, FYI, the .45-70 case has 'about' the same powder capacity of a .30-06 case (in the neighborhood of ~60 grains), depending on how deep bullets are seated, location of case shoulder (if necked down), etc. So.... that ought to give you an idea of the velocity potential.

Keep in mind that if this is in a Contender frame you can't run the same pressures as the bolt-action guns. For an Encore, or Ruger #1, or other 50,000CUP action, the performance should be very close to the '06 based cartridges.
