Has anyone done any conversions with the 450Marlin case to a smaller caliber? If so what caliber and what kind of performance was obtained? Serveral member of the Marlin board, when it was still at Marlin, were talking about trying different conversion using smaller calibers and I got to thinking about it this morning and thought I'd post the question here.
Thanks

Thanks Jack. That's my post over on www.marlinowners.com as well. I was trying to kill 2 birds w/1 stone. I was hoping to find someone or information of possibly going smaller than 40 caliber, somewhere around 25 to 30 caliber. I really like the Marlin rifle. The feel is right, it's setup for a scope in either scout or over the receiver. I have set aside for this project but I'm not really sure it can be done, still gathering information before I gather materials. If you or any one else has ideas or thought about the possibility of a project like this your thoughts would be appreciated.

Why the 450 Marlin case? The 45-70 would be a better choice. It is readily available at COMPETITIVE pricing and it will be around FOREVER while the future of the 450 Marlin is uncertain. The 45-70 brass is just as strong and has more capacity.

I was going to try and get a comparision of the two. Thanks for the information on the case difference. I started another thread about converting the 45/70 as well.

As the shoulder size increases, (cal gets smaller)
the bolt thrust increases, this is a bad thing when dealing with leverguns in general. If you go that route make sure you also give it the ackley treatment, with minimum cartridge body taper as this reduces bolt thrust also. Think of it this way the taper in a cartridge makes it easy to extract and is like a very long shoulder. The straighter you make this when you neck it down the less bolt thrust, ie less pressure on the falling block on the lever gun. Have fun Swany
