I was wondering if anyone could tell me what i need to legally hunt prarie dogs in wyoming and the rules/regulations if there are any for wyoming only. Do i need a licence?

No license necessary as they are not a game animal. Might want to check with Wyo Game and Fish for the final word.

22 lr to 150 - 200 yards, 223 or 243 on out. Good 4 wd. Big cooler full of ice and bevridges. High tolerance for the wind. GPS and preparation to spend the night. Modesty and humility for the missed long shots, (see tolerance for wind). Lots of fun in th sw portion. I hear it is way intense in the ne. If you get out our way give us a holler 2 -3 weks ahead and we will try to show ya around.

Bishop,
I think Wyogoose is on target. Wyoming is like the outback, you had better come prepared to spend the night and navigate the wide open spaces.

Personally, I am doing my prairie dog hunting in town. More to the point...trapping. I help an elderly couple with population control right here in town. Over the last few days we have removed upwards of a dozen juvenile prairie rats from their yard using plain old rat traps.

We bait them by tying on raw bacon with dental floss or by simply wedging a peanut under the tooth on the pan.

My Rem. 223 is a little too loud and a little too illegal for this chore.

I just got back from a trip in ND... Bring your sun screen... we went through two bottles in two days, and still got burnt... It was crazy fun though... we had 6 of us, and 25 firearms.. I almost had one with an old colt police positive .22 revolver.. we had a long recorded shot of 350 yds, and a close shot of 5 yds (with an SKS, not much left of the little bugger) If you have access to a range finder, bring that too...

Its a blast of time, Good Luck!

I would love to get out west sometime and snipe some prarie dogs. how does an easterner go about hunting prarie dogs in another state if they don't know anyone who lives in the midwest?

Just ride your horse around until he falls in a hole (grin)...

Seriously, you can see them from the interstate driving thru. Find the closest house, and begin asking. As long as you are sincere and don't come across as being 'snooty', most landowners will know who has what, where, and feed you a piece of pie and some coffee on the way back thru. Many appreciate getting rid of the da## things...

Here in texas, a friend found a guy who is trying to get rid of them, but doesn't have time himself, and it is cheaper than going to the gun range, also you don't have to walk over to reset all your targets, they right themselves :D The furthest gotten at that place is about 330 yards. The hard part on that is the crosshairs tend to cover the whole thing up :( btw we usually use a 22lr, a 243 and a 270.

I have a 223 varmint gun with a 6-24 scope and heavy barrel, my other rifle is a 243 in M70 featherweight, great on whitetails but the featherweight barrel contour makes it tough to use on varmints

We happend across a really nice guy at a bar one night after pheasant hunting in Dickinson, he has since found us private land for pheasant, PDs, and turkeys... So we got lucky... the following link, is pretty good. email them and request a hunting package, and they'll set you up with a list of ranchers that want the dogs off their land...

http://www.dickinsoncvb.com/outdoors.htm

this will also get you to the ND licensing webpage where you can purchase your license and what not...

Does anyone have a place near Casper? I live in Casper and I ma going down to Laramie to hunt with a friend down there. I believe we are going to a ranch owned by a guy he goes to chirch with, and I'm not sure where it is located, but I belive it is west of Laramie towards Medicine Bow. I would love to find a place closer to Casper, but at least I do have a plce to go. I will be taking a 22lr, 22 Hornet, 223, 30-06, 7.62X39, 338WM, and a 44 mag pistol and lever gun. I apologize for getting off topic.

Years ago in the late 1980's we used to hunt 'lopes NW of Lusk on BLM Lands. We observed several enormous dog towns. That entire area from Guernsey to Lusk to Casper contains many dogtowns and 'lopes.

I suggest contact the Stockman's Association(s), Feed Stores, and County Farm Agent for prospects.

.223 is a fine blend of long range accurasy, light recoil, and affordable ammo.

If you get into a good PD town, you'll need 2 rifles with good scopes and 500 rounds for each. the need for 2 rifles is so that you can alternate while one cools down. Be scoped well, zeroed at 200 and know the drop for your load out to 500 and you will have a lot of fun. After this day, you will smile every time someone says a 222, 223 is a 250 yd gun and that a 22-250, 220 swift is a 350 yd gun. when prarie dogs are at 400-500 yds, these become pretty nice long range shooters if you're ready for it. As far a as a caliber over 22, shoot a 1000 of them in a day.... There is a few million acres of BLM ( beaurea of land management ) in wyo. Get a map that shows the blm land and your off to the races. Make sure you swing by the winchester museum in Cody.
