Is there a heavy barrel bolt action .22 sporter/target gun out there in the $400 range? I've got a new TC Benchmark and like it, but would rather have a bolt. I'm coming back to real guns from airguns (not entirely), and the semi-auto wants to shoot too fast. Thanks for any thoughts.

Check out the Savage line: savagearms.com. Also, visit my website: www.rimfirenews.com and poke around through the "archived articles" area. The Savage Model 93 meet your requirements, cost wise, and will allow you some cash for a good scope to top it off with! Remember: even though some of my rifle reviews feature the 17HMR, the EXACT same model will be available in 22LR. Marlin makes excellent, inexpensive, accurate b/a's for well under your stated price range as well.

Consider the CZ452 Varmit. They are going for around $350.00, and have high reviews.

The CZ452 is an EXCELLENT choice, but pushes your $400 limit pretty hard. You still have to stash some glass on it, and you don't want to go with "cheap glass" on something you're serious about, accuracy wise.

The CZ, Marlin, Savage versions are all pretty good for the money. If you don't have a scope yet like Zig said, plan on another $400+ and get one you'll keep for a lifetime.
I'm sure there are oodels of suggestions, and not discarding the M69 Romanian trainers as a decent shoother.
I latched on to a Mossberg 46A that I mounted a inexpensive Simmons Blazer scope on and got real good results.
Since then I've picked up a Mossberg 44US(b) that I think will be loads of fun as well.

I'm looking at the CZ this weekend and expect I'll get it. The CZ's I've seen were mighty nice. Many thanks to all of you folks for your comments.
