Hi all, I've recently acquired a Stevens 87a. Its a .22 rifle with a tube magazine feed. This is my first rifle, it had been my grandfather's. Unfortunately, I know nothing about the care and feeding of it. Does anyone know how to clean it, or where I could get a manual for it?

Thanks!

To clean this rifle you must take it out of the stock by taking the takedown screw out on bottom of stock. The gun should fall out of stock. There is a plug on the back of receiver that has to come out so the bolt can come out.The bolt handle should just pull out with a slight tug. Then you can remove the bolt. The plug on back of receiver should unscrew,it's under a little spring pressure so hold on to it.Do not take the feed mechanism out. It's set at the factory and it's best not to touch it.I like to spray carb. cleaner to clean with and Remoil to lube with.Don't over lube a semiauto, just a mist. You can get a owners manuel by calling Savage Arms or e-mailing them.

Thank you, that's a huge help.

I looked at Savage arms website, and they more or less said they don't do that anymore, because they're under new management, and they don't want to do anything that might lead them into a liability case with the rifles from prior to 1995.

Thanks again Ken. Spent a good portion of Sunday Afternoon cleaning up a higgins 101.16 that I got from him, am looking at doing the 87a this weekend.

One more question... Do I need to break it down and clean the firing pin, chamber, etc. everytime I take it shooting, or once in a while and then clean the barrel. I keep seeing different opinions on this...

Unless you feel comfortable taking it apart,I would wait untill you are familiar with it.You could take some brake parts cleaner and hose down the action with the stock off and let it dry and spray a little mist of lube in it and that should get you by for now.

Can you please help me out?

I just purchased a Stevens .22 model 87A, and am looking for an owners manual. I checked the Savage Arms website, but as well, the don't have them available. Any idea if I can download one off the net, or where can I find one?

Craig

I haven't ever seen a manual for it either. I've just learned through trial and error with it. If you've got any questions about it, I'm sure there'll be plenty of folk to help answer them, this is a pretty common rifle.

Thanks for the reply!

Another question: the barrel lists "22short, long, or long rifle; long rifle as automatic only." What does this mean? Does this mean that I use 22 short ammo for the gun?

Also, is the loading port in the magazine at the bottom, or can I load from the chamber? Finally, how many cartridges can I load into the magazine?

Sorry for all the questions.. just new with this gun.

Short, Long or Long Rifle. You can use all 3 rounds if you're shooting in single fire. that means manually operating the bolt by pushing it in till it clicks when closing it, giving it a tug to unlock it, and working the bolt yourself to feed the next round.

The smaller rounds don't cycle the action adequately and can lead to jams if you try using those rounds in semi-auto mode, but is quite happy working at full capacity if you're operating the bolt manually.

magazine capacity is 15 .22 Long Rifle, 17 .22 Long or 22 .22 short cartridges. I typically load 5 rounds at a time with no trouble. At 8 and above, I've noticed it has a greater chance of jamming when firing the rifle semi-automatically

Clearing jams in this model can sometimes be a royal pain.

Overall though, the example I have is a tack driver and the most accurate of my .22s.

Your milage may vary.
