Frederick Courtney Selous, probably regarded as the greatest African Hunter and Naturalist, penned this book in 1881 about his life in Africa. Selous was the model for the books about Allan Quatermain and influenced the character, Indiana Jones. Teddy Roosevelt requested F.C. Selous accompany him and help guide through part of his famous safari.

This book chronicles Selous' life and hunting through the African wilds for 9 years, from September of 1871 through 1880. Selous lived as an ivory hunter, but was the quintessential naturalist. Selous' adventures inspired the safari industry and hunters like Roosevelt, Bell, and all that came after him.

For historical study and untamed Africa, this book is a must have. 10 of 10.

I just finished this book myself, and it certainly leaves you realizing that Selous was one amazing guy. Also, there is an article on Selous in the latest issue of "Sports Afield."
