Was going to Nashville Gun Show to get a 22 for my 10 year old son. Stop in Wal Mart in Kentucky and he pick out a Mossberg Int'l 702 Plinkster (semi auto). Decided not to make the 60 mile drive and bought the Plinkster. I thought at first it was a Marlin 995 (looks are simmiler) but made for Mossberg by CBC in Brazil (they also own MAGTECH ammo). Black synthetic stock, 18" bbl, adj folding rear sight, groove reciever, hooded front sight and a 10 round mag, weight around 4.5 lbs. Will take him to the range tomorrow to sight in and ring out (I've got a new upper on my AR to work out also). He's out grown his 22 Cricket and I thought it'll make a good 5th grade graduation present and spring squirrel in Kentucky opens June 5th!

Does anyone have any experience with this rifle?

I have a Mossberg Plinkster. Mine however is at least 20 years old. I bought it used that long ago. It is butt fed. It has a plastic thumbhole stock and no provision for iron sights. It had a small 4X 3/4" scope on it which I replaced with something bigger. It used to be VERY accurate until an accident made me change the barrel. Now its only so-so.
It breaks firing pins regularly, about every 2000-3000 rounds or so.

CBC has made some fairly good .22's over the years- the mag-tech - 1-22 bolt, and the Gr-8 black beauty- a rem nylon 66 clone. I have an importer's version of the Mag-Tech 1-22, and it has a pretty accurate barrel on it. No experience with the new 702 int'l, sorry...

I think the new plinkster would be quite a bit different from the 577 plinkster that luisyamaha describes.

Thanks for the responses.

Took my son out this past Sunday and zeroed the gun. Zeroed with the irons at 25yds first than put on my old Weaver 3-6x scope. Its shooting bulk Winchester and Federal 40gr HPs into about a inch at that range. No malfunctions in about 100 rounds. Does also have a bolt hold open on the last round (wish my 10/22 did).

Hey Doc Sharptail......Everyone I ever told about my GR-8 has sneered about what a piece of junk it must be, a copy of a plastic gun......until they shot it. Back when I was doing a lot of range testing, I took my GR-8 as an afterthought. I had just put an El Cheapo 4X scope on it, in a $4 see-thru mount that was worth about half that. I set it on the bags at 25 yards, fired five shots, and set it aside. Only when I got home and looked at the targets did I realize that all five shots could be covered by a thumbtack! Dumb as I was, I thought that was normal for a scoped 22, shooting cheap Remington ammo. (55 cents a box, I still have a few!). Looking thru my target book a few weeks ago, I found that target, and my jaw clinked off the floor. I've spent a ton of money trying to find a gun/ammo combination that would shoot half that good, and rarely succeeded. I still have the rifle, complete with its one quirk - it throws the cocking handle into the weeds every three or fours shots. I finally got tired of ordering more of them, now I use a fired 22 magnum case or a screwdriver to cock it!

I don't know if the Remington version of the gun shoots that well, but since I paid $55.00 for mine in 1986, I guess I'll keep it!

K-mart had them on for 39 bucks in the mid 80's. I read several favourable reports on the GR-8 and actually headed to K-mart to get one, but ended up with a different rifle altogether.... just the way it goes sometimes....

Hey and yes I have a lot of experience with it. I'm 16 and I've
had my mossberg 702 plinkster since I was about 13, it was a gift. The first shot was dead on and as far as I can remember, it has never jammed. It is a great first rifle, from it I learned all my safety rules and aiming rules, this rifle is just as accurate as a remington 10/22 but for a lot less. It is great for hunting, plinking, or just for practice, and it is a lot of fun. As for ammo, the only kinds that I have used are federal and remington but I have never had a problem with it.
And as for additional sights, just about anything will work I have a bsa 3-7X20 scope on mine and it is very accurate out to about 300 yds., but a lot of my hunting buddies are a lot more accurate so they can hit a lot farther with it but they all love it. Alltogether it is a great rifle.

the 702 plinkster is an excelent gun. when i took it apart after a couple hundred rounds it had 1/8 inch of lead build up and was still working like brand new. the only bad thing i find with this gun is that it likes to retain lots gun powder residue.
