OUTNUMBERED British soldiers killed 35 Iraqi attackers in the Army’s first bayonet charge since the Falklands War 22 years ago. The fearless Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders stormed rebel positions after being ambushed and pinned down.

Despite being outnumbered five to one, they suffered only three minor wounds in the hand-to-hand fighting near the city of Amara.

The battle erupted after Land Rovers carrying 20 Argylls came under attack on a highway.

After radioing for back-up, they fixed bayonets and charged at 100 rebels using tactics learned in drills.

When the fighting ended bodies lay all over the highway — and more were floating in a nearby river. Nine rebels were captured.

An Army spokesman said: “This was an intense engagement.”

The last bayonet charge was by the Scots Guards and the Paras against Argentinian positions.



Looks like the Brits didn't have any ammo or all 20 L85 malfuctioned. Good show, boys. :D

That is unbelievable, way to go guys. Makes you wonder if it was just so close they did the charge as it was safer than standing/kneeling and shooting. Sounds like it worked.

I say TOO BAD THAT THE 9 WERE CAPTURED. P.S. I fought with the Brits in "THE NAM". They were,and still are a great bunch. I have a great deal of respect for them.(WHO DARES,WINS)---pruhdlr

Who says bayonet and sabre tactics are dead? Good show! Glad they didn't suffer any casualties in their meyham.

Talk about 'old school!!' On the other hand, probably isn't much fun staring down a bayonet charge either.... probably takes a bit more nerve, marksmanship, and resolve than the average insurgent has. Bet the loudest sound was sandals hitting the pavement, at least for a short time..... amazing.
