I'm looking for any pinions on hunting rigs with red dot scopes. I looked back through past posts and read anything they have there, just looking for any new opinions. I have used a 870 turkey gun with a 4 m.o.a. and I really liked how easy it was to pick up an aiming point in a hurry. I was thinking of a woods gun for deer/ black bear. Having a new acquisition in a big bore lever gun , it srt of whets the appetite for a new sigth system. These old eyes need help. Although pricey, the Aimpoint seems to be a class act. Thinking that it can be had with 2X and 2 moa dot it could just be handy in the woods. All thoughts welcome and appreciated.

Have played with a few on various guns...the only ones it "stuck" to were a rifled 12ga. pump and a .22Semi-auto. Both are used at shorter ranges, both are used on game likely to be moving. For moving game, it may be the best sight possible...both eyes open, track the game, lead with the "blip"....guess it's the widest possible field of view that does it.
But I do tend towards larger "blips"...figure the whole reason for red dots is speed, and larger dots promote speed.. First started with a Weaver Quick point...best guess is that that red "blip" covered 18 to 22MOA. Tried the small dots...not fast enough unless cranked up to very bright levels where the light dot "bloomed" and looked larger. Settled on the 6-8MOA for the slug gun. Works pretty well on the .22 pistol as most shots are at 25-30yards, so a 6MOA dot covers about 1.5"...which is about right.
If you already use an electronic red dot on a hunting gun, there's not much more to be said as you know the pro's and con's of such a sight.
The Aimpoint is a quality optic device - you can't go wrong with it. The 2X magnification is a plus.
Have the ProPoint PD5P on a .22 Ruger MkII target pistol - it works quite well for the intended purpose of shooting paper. Haven't hunted with a red dot, so can't help you much there.

I'm using a cheapy Simmons red dot w/4MOA on my Guide Gun 45-70. I really needed to try something besides my 47yr old eyes at the longer hunting distances so opted for a cheapy for a trial basis. So far, I like the red dot as a system for this gun and have put shots in the same hole at 50yds but out at 100...well, just say I think these loads and me both need more practice. If you can find and make do with a 1 or 2MOA you'll find better accuracy at 100yds. Really, if you dont want crosshairs then the dot works well especially when in brush. If you get the big bore lever gun you can put 5 shots into a good group at 25-40yds with lightning speed.
