I am only 20 right now, but plan on getting a CWP when I turn 21, I am wondering though what all do they check for when ya get one? Because I know my credit isnt too good ( I was 18 and did some stupid stuff with my credit, long story) anyways what all do they check for and how hard is it to get one?
Thanks

I know up here you have to have a compelling reason for a CWP. You have to provide proof of previous attack, delivering large sums of cash, etc.
I'm not a fan of it since you pay $100 just to apply. This does not assure you getting a permit.
So, I don't have one. When I move, I will get one.
Boston, MA is not gun friendly. part of it goes back to the founding people in the area. They were nonviolent by nature.
Oh well.

Really depends on the state. Every state has their own regs from "will not issue" to "shall issue." Luckily, Indiana is a "Shall Issue" state which means they must issue the permit unless there is a compelling reason not to. They cannot deny you just because the CLEO got up on the wrong side of the bed. Indiana has a really queer quirk in their law. You can get a permit to carry a hangun when you are 18. My son got his just as soon as he turned 18. However, the law does not permit the sale of a handgun to anyone below the age of 21. So what does he carry, mine of course. Law says I can lend him my pistol to carry, along with the ammo, he just cannot buy it himself. How weird is that?

Hey thats in Indiana? Thats great! I am from Indiana, I am down in south carolina right now in the Marine Corps. I am going back home in July. Maybe I will be able to go ahead and get it up there in Indiana. How much does Indiana's CWP cost? Because it would probably be easier for me to get it in Indiana/ so where you from in Indiana? I am from Bloomington.

Practically neighbors, I am located on the Sunny Side of Louisville. The cost is $10 to have the local PD do the finger print and state check and $15 for the state to do the FBI check. What you need to do is go to your local PD and fill out the paperwork. They finger print you, take your $10, and then do the state check. After that is done, usually just a couple of days depending on locality, they give you the paperwork, you get your signature notarized, and enclose a MO to the state and off it goes. It takes between 4-6 weeks to be approved and the permit is good for 4 years. On renewal, you need to reapply (same procedure) no earlier than 30 days before your old permit expires, but your renewed permit should be back by the time the old one expires. If not, you old permit is extended until your application is passed on (renewed or denied).
Now, the bad news, according to http://www.packing.org/ while Indiana honors a SC permit, SC does not recognize Indiana's. I really wish they would get a law passed like driver's licenses where one state's permit is good for all. If not that, then fix it so that if you recognize another state's premit, they must honor yours, that seems only fair.

Koontzy,
If you have a "domestic violence" charge against you, according to federal law you are forever banned from OWNING any firearm, let alone CWP. If the babe in the bar backhands you with a beer bottle, put your hands in your pockets and walk home .....NOW.

Something else you may want to check out, there are four states that I know of (AZ, UT, FL and PA) that you can get a permit without being a resident, and the permit may be honored in your state. Utah requires a three-hour course, no range time, to get a permit. AZ requires a 16-hour course with qualification at the range, but I'm glad they're that thorough here -- the test isn't that hard, and you get a LOT of good information. Anyway, besides www.packing.org which has individual states' requirements, check out www.azccw.com. They will train for AZ and UT, and any other state that requires a course. There are others out there, but this one came highly recommended and after taking it, I'd recommend it as well.
Just my $.02
All of us neighbors in Illicago are also green with envy. Doubt we'll ever get anywhere close to CCW or CWP here....Thanks to Chicago Dictator Daley and IL gov Rob Blago..whatever....

In some states, Like here in Texas, you can take the CCW class 6 months before you turn 21. But you can't officially carry untill you're 21. It's just so that the license will be there by the time you turn 21 (That's here in Texas, anyway. It may be different in your state.). Check your state laws.

The can't buy til 21 regulation is Federal though. Not just selected states. One advantage that my dad especially likes about having his CHL, is that when you go to buy a gun, you show the dealer your CHL, and he don't have to do a background check. They've already done it for yur CHL.:D I'm gonna get mine soon. Just sent off for my application packet a couple days ago. When I get that, I'll sign up for a local class.

ALASKA!!!!! We don't need no STEENKING PERMITS!!!!
As of Sept 5, 2003, Alaskan residents no longer need a permit to carry concealed. The permits, however, are still available. They give you the ability to carry in states which have reciprocity with Alaska.
I don't know what the age is, it does not matter to one who is one week older than dirt...
Got to remember to get a smaller gun, can't conceal that SRH in summer clothes..
