Just picked up a Shooting Chrony F-1 standard and i was wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks. I have heard that you can rig up a remote using a momentary switch and a stero headphone plug, anyone else heard that rumor?

JB... I've got a F-1 but I just read the numbers and write them down.

I hadn't hear that trick, but mine's old, and the circuitry may be different now. They automatically reset between shots, so I don't know why you'd reset them anyway. The fancier ones have a remote readout that you can put on the bench.

OK, set it up at least 10 feet from the muzzle. You may have to go to 20 feet if you're shooting Magnums or black powder. I need binoculars to read it at 20 feet. You can't let the sun shine on the bullet while it's over the sensors, so a stepladder and some cardboard comes in handy. Best results are on bright overcast days.

Run a few .22s over it before you start popping Noslers, in case you have a bad setup. If the temperature is below freezing, have a spare battery in your shirt pocket.

My old one needs a shot to wake it up. The first reading is way off, like 3X or 1/3X of what it should be. I hear the new ones don't have that problem, but I can wake it up with a camera flash as well as a bullet.

Spend a few extra minutes lining it up. That keeps the bullet holes off the Chrony.

I had heard that if you use the remote, it will do all the math i.e. average, stadard deviation, extreme spread automatically. wish i would have taken more notice at the time. the chrony was a spur of the minute purchase actually, i was at cabela's today and they had $40 free for cabela's club members to spend this weekend only plus i got the wife signed for a card so that gave me another $40 wouldn't have to use it today but i couldn't find only $40 worth of stuff i needed and i couldn't convince the wife to let me pick up a 40 S&W so i picked up the chrony for $79 and change

Actually the higher priced models without the remote readout will do the math too. I think the remote switch resets it for the next string, if it can do the math. The website isn't too helpful, but the Master models have the remote readout, IIRC.

There's different models. The one with the remote keeps one less part of the chrono downrange and in harm's way, so that's good, it's what I have. Also, the length of the cord to the remote is your setup distance, if you don't feel like dragging a tap measure around :)

Yes the ones with remotes also do statistical functions, but so will most cheap calculator anymore. I wouldn't buy it just on the basis of that. Some have more 'memory' but I distrust electronic devices and write the shots down anyway.

Anyway they all work pretty good if you keep bullets holes out of the cases :)

Have fun with your new toy.

AH-HA! I knew i wasn't completely crazy. I found this post on the forum at www.accuratereloading.com

"just got an F-1 Chrony with remote display, and have only used it once. I wanted to try it out so I used it in a light rain without skyscreens. Velocities seemed to be as expected, but I'll run them again on a sunny day with the screens on.

On a side note, instead of buying a remote/button thingy to access the statistical data incorporated into all Chronys, I bought a $1 pair of headphones from the dollar store. Splice both ends and plug the stereo jack into the chrony. Everytime you touch the wires together it gives you the next statistical calculation. These include Shot #, String #, High, Low, Avg, Extreme Spread, and Std. Dev. I'll gurantee that this works and it will save you a few bucks if you want access to the statistical fxns."

Also, checking out that forum makes me really appreciate the job you moderators do. in the particular thread that the above mentioned post came from had so much flaming going on i had to turn my head to avoid singeing my eyebrows :D keep up the good work, gents!

One of the scarest things is using it to get the velocities for a Ballistics Coefficient (BC) when it is not known for the bullet you are shooting. Two strings shot recording velocities, one up close like normal and one distant... 100 yards is best. It's a strange feeling looking through your scope and seeing that device sitting down there in front of the target.

I'm getting ready to do this shooting for my custom mold as there is only one way to determine the number for ballistic calculations... shoot.

Steel, Ranch Dog, Lots and lots of steel. I just whipped up a spreadsheet to extrapelate the chronograph data. i can send you a copy if you wanted it. Beats doing the math on paper

I can bring mine down, and we can check that they both read the same and then get simultaneous readings, but whoever is shooting has to put their chrono in front of the target!!!!

I'm thinking since mine has the remote display it should stay near the bench..... :)

Shooting Chrony does sell 334ft of remote display cable so you can bring the display right to the bench, so maybe Mike should put his chrony downrange ;)

JB... Here is the spreadsheet I use... Chrony F1. XLS (http://cuero.nodial.net/~lindareamy/reloading/Chrony F1.xls).

The first sheet in the Workbook is for figuring load development. I enter a maximum load and minimum load if listed or 10% less. I also enter a powder VMD so that I can adjust my Lee PPM.

The second sheet of the Workbook is for the Chrony. Enter the velocities one through 10 and it will give you the data. I made the formulas capable of handling less than 10 numbers.

MikeG... Chicken!!! When can you come back?

As soon as I can weld up some armor for the Chrony :)

Hmmm.... maybe we should run some cables downrange, the pinouts shouldn't be hard to figure, and I have a cable crimper. Now that would be a real handy range feature.... cable drops at each yardage!!!!! Save some eyestrain looking at the display with binoculars.

I use the F1 Master. Here's an Excel spreadsheet I put together to caculate high, low, average, ES, SD, KE and power factor. It handles strings from 2 to 20 shots.

While we are doing that we could install a small camera at each range like those that you buy to use with your computer... about $20. I have a video monitor that isn't doing anything and a 6 position AB box that isn't either. No more spotting scope... just a monitor at the bench to look at your targets!

Here's a tip......it will work better if you don't shoot it.....sorry, after reading all the dialogue I just couldn't resist.
