Hi all, I have been bitten by the 1911 bug...I have been looking around for a 1911 as my next aquisition. I am pretty sure I am going to go Springfield Armory...was looking at Mil Specs etc..but had the opportunity to hnadle and shoot a TRP at the range yesterday thanks to the guy in the lane next to me. What a nice piece...and it surprised me how good it felt in my hand. Even a mediocre shooter like me shot very impressive...I think I am in love...Now to come up with the $$$.... ;) Any thoughts?? mack

They're great Mack, but if were shopping for a Springfield today, I'd go after one of their brand new 45 GAP's. You get a 9MM sized pistol with 45ACP performance. Like you, I'm searching for the money to make it happen, but I won't buy another 45ACP unless it's for sentimental reasons!!

i personally think the ultimate 1911 bullet is the 9x23 win. but since theres very few of them around i'd say either .45 ACP or .38 super, i've only shot colts though, so i cant give you an idea on brands.

Yep, it is the Glock word, and they collaborated to create the 45 GAP. It's a bit smaller in physical size than the 45ACP, so it can be put into a 9MM framed gun. It also performs as well as the old ACP in both velocity and energy delivered. All this in a 9MM size package. Makes carrying a 45 a lot neater and cleaner. Check the most current issue of American Rifleman. Glock and Springfield are the first two arms makers to the market with it.

It doesn't need the size of the 1911 frame. That's the whole point. Springfield's new XD in 45 GAP is about as close to a 1911 as you're gonna get as of this date. I don't think anyone is going to retro a "real" 1911 into 45GAP; that would make no sense at all. The best we 1911 purists can hope for as a "1911-like" pistol that shoots the 45GAP; and Springy's the only game in town, right now!.

Both great pistols own a 1911A1 Springfield and my grandfathers issue one from WW2. Just recently got my GAP and I Love it.
Its all the plus of the 1911 ACP and more
More capacity then the 1911, less recoil, cheaper then a 1911.

But don't let me talk you out of the 1911 I think everyone should own a 1911 its history in your hand (thank you Mr. Browning)

I fail to see how making a .45 round 1/8" shorter can make all the difference. Robar can make Glock grips smaller than a 2x4, why couldn't Glock? The 1911 .45 frame is not obese, why are other .45 pistols? If they couldn't make a .45ACP frame small enough, they weren't trying hard enough.

Poster wasn't asking about a .45 only a 1911 pistol. They come in many cartridges depending on usage. I currently own two M1911 pistols. A custom 5" thats usually my carry gun and a 3.5" lightweight Officers both in .45 ACP. Have a few others set up like a M1911 and those are a Coonan Model B in .357 Mag and Polish Radom P35 in 9x19. Also have a Colt .22 upper conversion. I have great faith in the proformance and realiablitiy of the gun.

Have recently carried two different M1911A1s in Iraq, one did give me extraction problems til it was fixed. However, I was able to fix it in the field with some help from members here and over at 1911forums.

SA makes a good product but so do others. You need to determine your projected role for the pistol (ie self defense, open carry/concealed, hunting (remember single shot conversions), target/plinking, or just because). For concealed carry look at some of lightweight frames with a shorter bbl. Also look for rounded edges, fixed vs. adj sights, std safety or ambi? What features do you want on the M1911? Only two other guns give you so many choices and manufactures. The AR15 and Ruger 10/22 (limited amount of manufactures) and can be easily swapped.

I just bought a Springfield Mil Spec. I haven't got to go to the range just yet, may get to go this friday. I really like mine so far. I got the bug for one a while back and the Mil Spec just seemed to fit my needs. I don't need a tricked out gun, just one that has decent sights and will allways go bang. For me the Mil Spec fit that description. (plus I found a sweet deal on one, a stainless model for $470)

Nice going, Matt! Good deal on a sweet gun. I'm thinking about another 45ACP, but mine has to have a ramped barrel, got bitten once when a load blew out over the feed ramp, won't go there again. If it had been a hare-brained reload it might be different, but this was a Remington factory load. Peppered my face, shattered the stocks and blew the remaining rounds out the mag well and right into my crotch. Triple ouch! I love the 1911 platform, but for now I'll stick with my EAA Witness. I've put loads thru that gun that should have turned it to shrapnel, and it just chugs along.
