Has anyone shoot or anyone purchased the new remington 504 bolt action 22 rim. If so what do you think of it. I'm toying with the the idea of buying one but want to see how people like and if they think it's worth the bucks for it.

hoeram,
I just got one today for test and evaluation. Put a Leupld 4X Rimfire on it and ran 4 different kinds of ammo through it: Remington Target, Remington HiVelocity, Wolf Match Target and CCI SGB. It shot nickel sized groups at 50 yards with all but the HiV's. I was most impressed. It looks just like a baby 700. I've got more testing to do, but do keep it in mind as a serious contender for your shooting dollar. It is a bit pricey, in the league with the Kimber Hunter (which I've tested; www.rimfirenews.com ) and it holds its own in this very fast company. I'll try to get a photo or two up on the site. Or, send me your email address at: info@rimfirenews.com and I'll ship you some images at your personal email address.

Thanks for the info it sounds like it's a sweet piece. I have seen some photos of it and read what I've found written about it so far it looks like a serious 22 rim for the cash. Again thanks for the info and you can send photos to me at

I purchased one of the first 504s in my area and have a very low 6XX serial number. My biggest complaint was with the magazine. It was very difficult to extract. This was due to the seam had material left from when it was put together. I filed and buffed it and the problem was correct. (I want to adjust the trigger a bit, too.)
I agree that this rifle is most likely a direct competition for the Kimber Hunter. The MSRP of the two is very close.
I have a B&L 4200 Elite scope mounted on my rifle. It shoots well with Wolf MT, Fiocchi 320, CCI MiniMag, and surprizingly well with CCI Velocitors.
I would call this rifle and excellent high end squirrel rifle. Out of the box it is not a target rifle and would require some tweaking to get there -- My Kimber HS is superior to my 504.
I am pleased with the 504 and hope it shoots in to be as accurate as my 541-T.
Regards,
Rich

Rich,
I had the same problem with the magazine when I first got my 504 for testing. I took a bit of emory cloth and buffed it up a bit and it now falls partially out of the well when I hit the release. I just can't figure out why Remington continues to have magazine problems! As big as they are; as much gun making experience as they have; as good as most of their firearms are; why do they continue to screw around with these sub-par mags? My 597's mag cost me at least a fist full of gray hair, and Remington has been messing around, trying to fix that mag issue for years!
By the way, I tried some Remington Ely Match EPS in my 504, and it really loves these pricey little dudes! Tiny, one ragged hole, 6 shot groups at 50 yards.

I handled a Model 504 at a favorite gun shop and got chest pains when I saw the hang tag price. All the best...

Given that this is a Remington, I would expect the fit and finish to be superior to my CZ's. I've been pondering a new CZ452 FS. I don't need another .22, but for the hundred dollars difference in price, should I look at the 504? Or are we comparing apples to oranges? I have a Rem 700 Mtn Rifle in .308W and it's very accurate for a box stock rifle. What say ye gentlemen?

I say to thee, fullchoke, that the 504 is worth a look. As mentioned in the earlier post, other than the magazine problem, which I did a field fix on, I have nothing bad to say about the the 504. It is a bit pricey, but the fit and finish is right up there with the Kimber Hunter; the checkering appears to be "real;" and it has an old fashioned oil finish instead of that darned poly junk the arms companies began using several years ago. Go to your local gun runner and at least fondle one, if you can't get a loaner to shoot. Or, if you live in or near Texas, come on over to my place and I'll let you run a few boxes through mine!

Thanks gunwriter. I think I'll pass on the invite to the great state of Texas. But if you are ever up here visiting the Original Bass Pro Shop/Outdoor World, drop me a note. I'm about nine miles from the front door. Actually I live closer to the shop where Retiredsquid bought his 504. I guess I'll make that eighty mile trip instead of going to Texas.
BTW; I thoroughly enjoy your site. Keep up the good work.

fullchoke,
The BassProShops in Katie and Grapevine, TX have a LOT of my money in their banks, so I probably won't be heading to the Show Me State to make another donation, but I appreciate the offer.
Thanks for the nice comment on my site. It's a labor of love, but it's still nice to hear some favorable feedback!

Just got to handle one in the gun store yesterday. Lovely looking gun til I got to the price tag. Darned near had to have CPR. Could have bought a nice centerfire for less money. Almost takes the fun out of shooting watching the prices go up like that. Sure hope gun prices don't follow gasoline prices.

New to the forum but wanted to give my two cents on the 504:
I bought one sight unseen from galleryofguns.com, and of course it's always a gamble buying a wood stocked rifle this way. But so far, I am quite pleased with the purchase. Yes the price is a bit high, but given it's intended niche, I feel it's worth it. Not quite what I would call top end, but only slightly lower. Not a Kimber or Cooper, but better than a Ruger or Marlin by far. I am still waiting on a Leupold one piece ring base, then I'll see if it shoots well. It came with Weaver bases, but I like the windage adjustments in the base. No problems with the magazine, it drops free when the latch is pressed, even empty. Fit and finish is consistent with the price too. It's obviously been designed to be able to be chambered in hotter cartridges as well (22 mag, 17 hmr, etc.) so it is pretty beefy in the action and barrel. They are out there for less than $600 too, so don't be afraid of the sticker price.

It's been awhile since I posted this and I have since had a chance to hold and slobber on a 504. I was very impressed with fit and finish and I found it new in the box for $569.00 not a bad price for a nice weapon. No I did not buy it instead I put my money on a Ruger Bisley in 45 Colt 7.5 in. BBL .I always liked the 45 and wanted another one as I sold mine years ago. The 504 is still on my want list and I will get one at a later date. Thanks to all for the info on it.

If you are laying out the cash, I'd buy something else. It would be a GREAT gun at $100-$150 less. If you feel like laying out that kind of jing for them...buy something a little more "up market" like the Kimber. If you want a gun that's dead on as accurate...and maybe not as refined, go the CZ route.
It's a gun designed by marketing...fits into a small subsection of shooters that don't have the money to go "BIG" with their rimfires but don't want to have the same thing as everybody else...not saying the folks that buy them are really that way...it's just the marketing. Soon you will see more marketing on how it compares to the Kimber, Sako and even Anschutz..."as good at 2/3'rds the price"....right.

Maybe I can take that extra $150 and put it into better optics. Maybe I just want an American smallbore that is of better quality and functionality than a Marlin or Savage.
I think Remington knows what they're doing. Kimber and Cooper are just too far off the scale for a lot of folks, but a high (but not too high) quality walnut stocked bolt action like the Winchester 52 or Remington 37 (and later 40X) will sell. Of that I am sure.
I like my Anschutz 1413 but I would have liked better to buy a 52 or 40X. They just didn't have the stocks to compete.
If only the 504 came in left hand I would own two of them by now. As it is, i'll have to go Anschutz and pay hundreds more than I otherwise might have. And take American jobs away.
That is a shame.
